    A lorry driver and van driver suffered serious injuries when their vehicles collided near Lichfield yesterday, Staffordshire Police has said.

    The crash happened on Wood End Lane in Fradley at 12:20.

    The 41-year-old van driver is said to be in a critical condition.

    The lorry driver is said to be stable.

    A man has been found guilty of murdering a 65-year-old who was found dead in his Walsall flat.

    The body of Edwin Bradley was discovered at his property on St Thomas Close in Coalpool on 6 July, and a post-mortem exam revealed he died from blunt force trauma to the head.

    Darren Barnes, 47,of Bloxwich Road, Walsall, was found guilty of his murder earlier by a jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

    No evidence had been offered for a charge of theft.

    Barnes is due to be sentenced at the same court on Thursday.

    Police have released an e-fit image of a woman whose unusually pointy chin and wide eyes are prompting comparisons with an alien.

    The Staffordshire force is investigating the burglary of a home - but on social media, the talk is more "phone home"; with the public seeing a strong resemblance to E.T.

    Some observers have speculated the suspect is the little lost alien's girlfriend. Another recalled the blockbuster's final scenes, suggesting she was "last seen escaping the area on a bike".

    Others thought there was a likeness with a more recent movie, saying the image resembled Harry Potter villain Lord Voldemort - in a wig.

    According to police, the reality is more down to Earth. Officers say they are looking for a "very skinny woman in her mid-30s" who speaks with a Birmingham accent instead of an other-worldly dialect.

    Efforts to save the Donnington branch of Lloyds bank have failed.

    The parish council had appealed to the bank to provide the Telford suburb with a mobile branch instead, based at the council's offices on Turreff Avenue. Lloyds declined.

    Just 65% of patients who went to A&E in Shrewsbury or Telford last month were treated within the government-set requisite of four hours, according to data.

    The NHS figures show the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust had the second-worst A&E figures in the country.

    The national average for patients seen within the four-hour target is 86%; itself below the 95% target.

    The hospitals have had problems with staff shortages and the trust came close to closing the Telford A&E overnight last year over concerns the service couldn't be run safely.

  7. Man killed in car crash 'friend to many'published at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2019

    The family of a man who died following a three-car collision in Castle Bromwich said he was a "friend to many who will be missed forever".

    Ross David Williams, 37, suffered a serious head injury when his Peugeot 207 was struck on Collector Road, near the junction of Lanchester Way, at about 08:25 on Friday.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    A family statement said: "He was an adored son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and nephew. He was a friend to so many and will be missed forever."

    Two men aged 42 and 25 who were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving have been released under investigation.

    A Warwickshire councillor says local authorities need fewer "fat, middle-aged white men" and more young people in the council chamber.

    The 70s star was famously dubbed one of The Three Degrees alongside Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham and helped open the door for black footballers in the English game.

    He'll be honoured with a Doctor of Letters in recognition of his contribution to football and his efforts to stamp out racism.
