    A cat who has been stuck up a tree for five nights days has been rescued.

    The feline was spotted on Richmond Hill in Harborne five days ago.

    West Midlands Fire crews and the RSPCA had been unable to tempt it down, but the owners paid for a tree surgeon to fetch it down.

    A court's been told a man planned for acid to be thrown on his three-year-old son in an attempt to discredit his estranged wife.

    The youngster, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, suffered serious burns to his face and arm at the Home Bargains store in Worcester on July 21, last year.

    Opening the case for the prosecution at Worcester Crown Court, Jonathan Rees QC told jurors it was a cowardly attack on a defenceless child who was squirted with sulphuric acid.

    The child suffered burns to his arm and forehead.

    The man, who can't be identified, and six others have denied being part of the plot.

    A 17th century farmhouse in Solihull could be turned into a pub and restaurant.

    An application to the borough council application seeks approval for a change of use at Tidbury Green Farm, in Fulford Hall Road.

    The scheme would require the refurbishment of the Grade II-listed farmhouse and nearby outbuildings, as well as extensions and alterations on the site and the creation of a 49-space car park for customers.

    The application, which could create around 40 jobs, has been submitted by the pub group Brunning and Price.

    Action over a road near to a school is needed before a child is killed, its pupils have said.

    West Coventry Academy pupils presented a 658-signature petition to the city council saying students have been knocked off bikes on Hawthorn Lane.

    Student Josie Criminisi said buses stopped opposite the academy which meant pupils "walk out behind the parked bus into the path of incoming traffic".

    “Some of these students are only 11 years old and have never experienced such a busy road. This is where we see the majority of our near misses.”

    Council officer Karen Seagar said there had not been enough reported collisions to install a zebra crossing, but gateway features and splitter islands could be brought in.

    Staffordshire County Council has dropped its plan to stop funding school crossing patrols.

    It had wanted local communities to pay for their own lollipop men and women, to save it money.

    It now says after listening to public and staff feedback it will carry on paying for the patrols - at a cost of £1.4m in the next financial year.

  11. Unemployment rate rise 'a real concern'published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2019

    A further increase in unemployment in the West Midlands is a "real cause for concern" say business leaders.

    The region's unemployment rate rose by 0.5% to 5.2% between September and November 2018 - second only to the North East's 5.5%, the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) said.

    Meanwhile, its employment rate fell to 1.3% - the only region to show a decrease.

    He said in the year to September 2017 the West Midlands saw the creation of 148,000 jobs, but in the same period to 2018 the figure was just 6,000.

    GBCC head Paul Faulkner said: “Given the uncertainty on the horizon we are doubling down our efforts to support local businesses in up-skilling and boosting productivity and growth."

    Geraint Williams told family members: "I have been doing this job for 30 years and it still gets to me.

    "From what I said I think it is likely your boy heard someone calling for help and went to see if he could help."

    Mr Williams added: "I am older than you are, please do not think this impertinent - this will never go away for you.

    "But it gets easier to live with and that is all we can hope for. Please accept my condolences."

    Warwickshire are to play their County Championship home fixture against Essex in July at New Road - the home of neighbouring rivals Worcestershire.

    The staging of the ICC World Cup during June and July meant that the Bears would have to play at least one Championship game away from Edgbaston.

    And instead of using an out-ground, they have chosen to go to Worcester.

    "We know that New Road is always a very popular venue for cricket fans," said chief executive Neil Snowball.

    Plans for a new bypass around the north-west side of Shrewsbury have received a boost of about £54m from the government, says Shropshire Council.

    Steve Davenport, cabinet member for highways, said the bypass, which is expected to cost about £75m, would make a "huge difference" to people in the town and outlying villages.

    "It has been on the cards for 40 years," he said.

    "But a lot of lobbying in the last 18 months has paid off."

    The announcement follows a meeting between the town's Tory MP Daniel Kawczynski and Transport Secretary Chris Grayling on Monday.

    A new community football stadium for Leamington Football Club has taken a step forward.

    An agreement between Warwick District Council and Warwickshire County Council, external has been made to purchase land off Europa Way to make way for the development of a sports and community hub.

    The team are currently 14th in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.

    The plans, which have been developed by Leamington FC and the district council, could see the construction of a 5,000 capacity football stadium with a 3G artificial pitch, conference facilities, gym, café and community facilities on land adjacent to Europa Way and Gallows Hill.

    Leamington FC's Chairman Jim Scott said it is a "key milestone" in creating a new home.

    He added: "A new stadium with improved access and facilities will help us fulfill our aspirations to move into higher leagues."

    A man has been jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to a string of serious sexual offences against children.

    Neal Hopkins, 46, of Stone Road, Trent Vale, Stoke-on-Trent admitted 26 charges at the city's crown court, including paying for the sexual services of a boy.

    Police say the charges related to incidents over five years in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Worcestershire and Yorkshire and Wales.
