    More foster carers are needed to look after increasing numbers of children in the care system, charity Barnardo's said.

    The number of children in care in England has jumped more than a quarter in a decade, the charity said ahead of the launch of its annual fostering campaign today.

    Helen Elward, 62, from Rugby, Warwickshire, has looked after almost 40 children over the past eight years.

    Budget cuts to stop smoking services would be “disastrous” for Shropshire, a councillor has said.

    Due to budget pressures, Shropshire Council is looking at a £4m public health spending reduction, which means the Help2Change prevention service could be at risk.

    A meeting of the council's Health and Adult Social Care Overview and Scrutiny Committee, external heard the county's service costs £232,540 a year to run, but has an above national average success rate of 46 per cent.

    Members voted to write to the council’s cabinet, urging that they press for the service to be retained.

    Councillor Madge Shineton, member for Cleobury Mortimer, said: “I can’t think of anything more disastrous than to stop something like this.”

    Police are appealing for information after a man went missing on Friday morning.

    Michael Worsley, 69, hasn't been seen since he left his home in Withington, Herefordshire.

    His family say it's very out of character.

    Members of the public are being asked to spread the word via social media and share any information they may have with police.

    A man and a woman have been arrested after drugs were found during a search of a house in Stoke-on-Trent.

    During the 08:00 raid at the house in Metcalfe Roa, Tunstall, officers seized class A drugs, cannabis, £1,000 in cash and phones.

    A 26-year-old man from Liverpool and 25-year-old woman from Stoke were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs.

  7. Turnout hopes for funeral of RAF couplepublished at 07:45 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2019

    The RAF is hoping for a good turnout for the funeral of an elderly couple who died within 10 days of each other.

    Dambusters engineer Victor Barnett, died on 21 December aged 101. His wife Edna, 91, died on the 31st.

    The couple met in the air force with Mr Barnett being seconded to the 617, as part of the engineering team preparing Lancaster bombers for the mission.

    Mrs Barnett worked with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force.

    The force launched an appeal for people to attend the funeral in Telford as the couple had no children or living relatives.

    West Bromwich Albion kept up the pressure at the top of the Championship as they eased past struggling Bolton Wanderers 2-0.

    Jay Rodriguez put the Baggies ahead early on when he nodded home Craig Dawson's flicked header on the goal-line.

    Sam Field wrapped up three points as he latched onto a ball cleverly dummied by Dwight Gayle to finish with ease past Bolton keeper Ben Alnwick.

    Victory moves Darren Moore's side up to third in the table, four points behind leaders Leeds.

    All lanes on the M6 are now open following an earlier lorry fire.

    Two lanes had been closed southbound between Junction 17 for Sandbach and 16 for Stoke-on-Trent/A500.

    A motorist was stopped by traffic police after allegedly watching a film while driving on the M6.

    Officers patrolling the motorway found the driver of a VW Passat had stored the phone in a cradle with a film playing.

    Warwickshire Police said he was reported to their ticket process office who could generate a penalty notice or elect a court summons.
