  2. Skeletal cat found dumped in rubbish binpublished at 16:16 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2019

    This ginger cat was so thin when he was found, every bone in his body was sticking out.

    He was discovered in a communal bin on Willow Street in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Monday.

    The RSPCA said it appeared he had been kept in a "filthy cat carrier", without food or water, for some time.

    He is now being treated at a surgery in Trentham, eating well, and making a good recovery

    Female workers at Solihull Council are still, on average, earning significantly less than male colleagues, according to its latest gender pay gap figures.

    The most recent statistics reveal that women’s hourly earnings are 19.4% t lower - when taking a mean average - stretching to 26.7% when using a median average.

    Discussing the issue at this week’s remuneration committee officers insisted the council was committed to equality.

    “[We] will continue to review and monitor our processes to ensure that Solihull remains a place where our employees are treated fairly and equally irrespective of gender," the committee chairman said.

    Young people in Walsall are carrying knives to feel safer and scare others from attacking them, a report has revealed.

    Data in the report to Walsall Council shows that between April and September in 2018 there were 33 youth knife-related incidents – just 11 short of the whole figure for the 2017/18 financial year.

    The council's Youth Justice Service spoke to 20 young people, who are receiving intervention, about why they carry knives.

    They identified the main reason to carry a knife was to feel "safer", however conversely this was closely followed with "to scare others".

  5. Tributes left for police crash death womanpublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2019

    Tributes have been left at a site where a woman on a mobility scooter died after being hit by a police car.

    Jessie Whitehead was struck by the marked Warwickshire Police vehicle whilst crossing the road in Bedworth on Wednesday. She later died in hospital.

    The police car had been responding to an emergency call when the incident happened.

    Flowers and messages were left by her family who said the 74-year-old was a "wonderful mother and grandmother, and loved by everyone who knew her".

    An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Independent Office of Police Conduct.

  7. Man dies after car hits treepublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2019

    A man in his 60s died when his car hit a tree in Redditch.

    West Midlands Ambulance Sevice said it was called to the A4189 Warwick Highway, between Battens Drive and Alders Drive, shortly before 06:20 on Wednesday and he died at the scene of the crash.

    The rail line between Rugby and Nuneaton has been blocked while transport police deal with a trespass incident.

    Cash and cigarettes were stolen from the Co-op on Cressida Close, Heathcote, near Leamington Spa, at about 06:50 on Monday.

    Warwickshire Police appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

  12. Leaks in new £8.5m water pipepublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2019

    Leaks in a new £8.5m water pipe in Hereford are being investigated by Welsh Water.

    Water from a burst near the junction of Bakers Lane and Three Elms Road caused traffic disruption back in November, but the company said it happened during testing of a water main that isn't yet in use.

    It said it is not unusual to find "small leaks" like this when pipes are laid and they will be fixed before the pipe becomes operational.

    Herefordshire Council said Welsh Water would have to resurface the road to its previous standard, once the work is complete.

    The England and Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali says "one of our greatest days" is needed, if they're going to win the first test match against the West Indies - but he's not giving up hope.

    He was out first ball as England were bowled out for just 77 and the hosts ended more than 300 runs ahead with four wickets remaining in their second innings.

    Moeen said he thought England have the players to take those final wickets quickly and that he thought it was "still a decent pitch" to bat on.

    Worecester Warriors flanker Carl Kirwan has gone out on loan to Championship side Ealing Trailfinders for the rest of the season.

    Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell has promised his side will "prepare right" for their match against Colchester and won't repeat the mistakes they made when the sides last met in August.

    A man who kicked a traffic warden in the head, knocking out three teeth, has been jailed for 20 months.

    He lashed out after being given a £35 penalty notice for using a disabled parking space without a blue badge, Stoke-on-Trent City Council said.

    Grant Saville, 27 from Weston Road in Weston Coyney, was captured verbally abusing the warden on a body camera. He then attacked the warden when tripped while trying to escape.

    Saville admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at the city's crown court yesterday.

    Eight Staffordshire police station buildings are going to be sold off.

    They include the stations in Tunstall, Blythe Bridge, Newcastle, Eccleshall and Stone (pictured below) which the force says are no longer open to the public.

    The force's commissioner, Matthew Ellis, says they aren't needed anymore, as officers can work more effectively out of the office, thanks to mobile technology.

    People living in the Shropshire Council area may soon be charged for their garden waste to be picked up.

    The Conservative-run authority, which is also considering getting rid of its recycling banks at places like pubs, supermarkets and village halls, says the two measures can save it £1.5m.
