    The man who murdered Daniel Kennell, stabbed to death in Coventry last year, has been jailed for life, with a minimum sentence of more than 21 years.

    Mr Kennell, 27, was found stabbed on St Austell Road in Walsgrave, Coventry, in July and later died in hospital.

    Ryan Preston, 27, of Hermitage Road, Coventry, denied murder but was found guilty at Warwick Crown Court on Thursday.

    He was sentenced today to serve 22 years, minus the 198 days spent on remand.

    Campaigners from a religious group are calling on the government to review how they are identified on the next census, due in 2021.

    Currently, most Sikhs in the West Midlands identify as "Indian" but campaigners say they need to be identified as an ethnicity in order to be seen and heard by public and community organisations.

    The group, including the Sikh Federation UK and supported by Birmingham Edgbaston MP Preet Gill, say there should be a separate box to tick on the census form.

    A man is being treated at Royal Stoke Hospital after he was cut from a car after a crash near Nantwich.

    A minutes applause will be held by Stoke City fans in memory of a Staffordshire baby who died from sepsis and pneumonia earlier this month.

    Arthur Keeling passed away just hours after being diagnosed with the disease.

    His parents,from Silverdale, say they have already had lots of support from fellow Stoke fans and the applause will be held in the 14th minute of the game against Preston tomorrow.

  5. Shrewsbury look for FA Cup cash boostpublished at 10:19 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2019

    Shrewsbury Town boss Brian Caldwell is hoping for another cash-boost from the FA Cup tomorrow, when they host Premier League Wolves.

    The match is sold out, with nearly 10,000 fans expected to be at the game, but the club won't make a lot of money from ticket sales, once costs are taken into account and the revenue is shared with their opponents.

    Instead, he said the real money is made from incentives.

    Caldwell said they were awarded £135,000 for beating Stoke City in the previous round and expect another payout if they manage to win again.

    And he said there are other bonuses - such as the £250,000 for being the last club in League One left in the competition.

    At the moment they are one of four teams from the division.

    Hillcrest Farm on the Fosse Way in Stretton-on-Fosse was burnt to the ground and two Harley motorbikes stolen in the incident.

    It's believed the house was broken into before the premises were set on fire, said Warwickshire Police.

    It's asking anyone with information about the 4 December incident to get in touch.

    A Birmingham bar has lost a second attempt to lift a licence ban imposed after a suspected altercation with door staff allegedly provoked a petrol bomb attack.

    Zara’s Bar, on Birmingham's Broad Street, argued the sanction was "too harsh" and effectively "destroys" the business.

    A licensing sub-committee suspended the venue’s licence, which permits it to sell alcohol and play music, after violence flared at the front door earlier in January.

    It is suspected the incident, which saw a doorman punch a customer to the ground, provoked a retaliation attack around an hour later when two petrol bombs were thrown at Zara’s from a passing car, fortunately landing on the floor without injuring anyone.

    The sub-committee ruled to maintain the suspension order until a full expedited review hearing due to take place within the next few weeks.

  9. Labour parties make last-ditch bid to stop hospital movespublished at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2019

    Six Labour groups across Shropshire and mid Wales have send a joint letter to the county's health commissioners calling on them to withdraw their plans to reorganise hospital services.

    The proposals would involve making Shrewsbury the county's centre for emergency medicine and Telford a centre for planned care and are expected to be approved on Tuesday.

    A spokeswoman for Shrewsbury's Labour group said "thousands of people, especially the poorest and those living in rural areas, will face a still greater challenge in accessing hospital care".

    The NHS says the aim of this reorganisation of hospital departments, called Future Fit, was to make services safer and sustainable.

    Engineers are at the site of a burst water main in the Digbeth area of Birmingham.

    Severn Trent apologised to customers who were experiencing poor or no water supply and said it was working to ensure all supplies are restored as soon as possible.

    A fire involving a number of scrap buses in Tividale last night is believed to be arson.

    About 25 firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 21:40 at the bus depot on Temple Way.

    Initially one bus was found to be alight, it said, but then spread to a further five vehicles.

    A fire investigation has been launched and police have been informed, West Midland Fire Service said.

    All crews left the site at about 23:00.

    A light projected onto the ground in front of driverless vehicles could help pedestrians and other road users know where the self-drive vehicle is going.

    Jaguar Land Rover has added the technology to a driverless pod, external created by Aurrigo, the autonomous vehicle division of Coventry business RDM Group.

    The technology beams a series of projections onto the road to show the future intentions of the vehicle.

    Trials were set up by engineers, working in Jaguar Land Rover’s Future Mobility division, after studies showed 41% of drivers and pedestrians are worried about sharing the road with autonomous vehicles.

    A project to tackle homelessness, based on a model used in Finland, is being officially launched.

    Housing First aims to house rough sleepers first, and then identify their needs and offer relevant support.

    West Midlands Mayor Andy Street visited Finland in 2017 to see how the scheme, which has seen recorded long-term homelessness cut by 43%, works.

    Birmingham is the first place to launch the project in the West Midlands after receiving £4m in funding.

    The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner says a 10% rise in recorded crime across the region further emphasises the need for more resources.

    Nationally the increase in recorded crime is 8%, with more murders and knife crime being reported in the 12 months to September last year.

    Labour's David Jamieson is calling for a change in approach from the government on police funding.

    Inquiries are continuing into the death of a woman hit by a police car as she was riding a mobility scooter.

    Jessie Whitehead, 74, was struck by a marked Warwickshire Police vehicle responding to an emergency call in Bedworth on Wednesday.

    The car was responding to a road hazard call, the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) said.

    IOPC regional director, Derrick Campbell, offered his sympathies to the family and friends of Ms Whitehead,

    "We will be speaking to a small number of members of the public who we know were at the scene, but if anyone else witnessed the collision we would be grateful if they came forward," he said.
