    A mechanic from Birmingham wants to encourage more women to get into the industry and has set up a group to help them.

    Louise Baker founded Womanic after hearing that female friends and family felt intimidated when they took their cars to be fixed.

    The 37-year old said “We’re not totally rare. There are some female mechanics, they’re just few and far between,”

    “Just don’t be afraid to get dirty. You’ve got to get dirty. Get stuck in and get dirty and just enjoy it.”

  4. Man hit by train was 'unaware it was approaching'published at 11:26 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2019

    Rail investigators say it appears a man who died after being hit by a train in Tibberton near Droitwich had been unaware it was approaching.

    The Rail Investigation Branch says evidence suggests the man had started to cross the line on a public footpath at 09:55 on 6 February after waiting for one passing train.

    The investigators say the conditions were foggy and the man was seemingly unaware of the second one, which was approaching from the other direction at 99 miles per hour (158 km/h).

    The full findings will be published when the investigation is complete.

    An 18-year-old is due in court today charged with murder after a man was stabbed to death in Coventry.

    Patrick Hill, 22, was found with knife wounds at Albany House, Brunswick Road in the city at about 02:30 on 10 February and died three days later.

    A post-mortem revealed he died of stab wounds.

    Levi Whitmore-Wills, 18, was initially charged with wounding, said West Midlands Police,, external but charged with murder on Monday.

    Officers are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

  6. MP bids to make eating meat from dogs illegalpublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2019

    The North Herefordshire MP Bill Wiggin is attempting to make it illegal to eat meat from dogs.

    He's presenting a Private Members Bill to parliament today and also wants pressure put on China and other countries to get it outlawed there too.

    Mr Wiggin says dogs there are made to suffer before they're killed, to increase the amount of adrenaline in the meat, believing it improves the taste and hopes the UK can set an example.

    A police car has been taken off the road after having its windows smashed in Coventry.

    Telford Tigers have been dealt a blow with the news their giant forward Doug Clarkson is leaving to take up a job in his native Canada.

    The 6ft 5in player has scored more than 40 goals since returning to the team earlier this season and has nearly 30 assists, but said: "I made a decision earlier in the season that if I got a job offer back home I would take it."

    Clarkson had moved back to Canada at the end of the 2016-17 season, to train to become a firefighter, but came back in October last year, to have one more season with the Tigers.

    His last game for the team will be on 24 February.

    Up to 150 members are expected at the Redfern Road Depot in Tyseley during the day of action by striking bin workers in Birmingham.

    Those already gathered had placards which read "betrayed by a labour council" and "bin your blacklisting Birmingham Council."

    Collections in the city have moved to fortnightly, which the council said was to ensure "reliability of service" until the dispute is resolved.

    Picket lines are in place at four council refuse depots from 05:00 until 14:00, Unite said.

    Councillors have called for the health secretary to step in over plans to reorganise Shropshire's hospital services.

    The Future Fit plan will see Shrewsbury house the county's main emergency care centre and Telford's A&E downgraded to an urgent care centre.

    Telford & Wrekin Council said the plan will be detrimental to its residents.

    At an extraordinary general meeting, councillors agreed to report the decision to Matt Hancock MP for review.

    More than 1,500 farmers are gathering in Birmingham today for the National Farmers' Union (NFU) conference.

    NFU president Minette Batters has expressed disappointment with hardening political stances in Westminster over Brexit and a lack of practical planning for life outside the European Union.

    The conference is expected to call on the government needs to convene a new commission of food and farming experts to ensure it upholds the high standards of British food production post-Brexit.

    A fire on an industrial estate in Tamworth is still being dealt with, said the fire service.

    About 30 firefighters were called to Hedging Lane after the fire broke out shortly before 04:50.

    A farewell fly-past by the retiring RAF Tornado fleet will visit the Midlands today.

    The aircraft, used by the RAF for 40 years, will be retired from service by the end of March.

    Jets will fly over the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire at around 13:15 before heading to RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury in Shropshire at around 13:30.

    Ozzy Osbourne has cancelled tour dates in New Zealand, Australia and Japan while he recovers from pneumonia.

    The Birmingham-born performer was forced to call off the UK and European legs of his No More Tours 2 due to flu, organisers said.

    He had been suffering from flu and was diagnosed with a severe upper-respiratory infection, according to a January 29 statement on his website.

    Announcing the cancellations, the 70-year-old's Twitter account attributed a quote to wife Sharon that said "his doctors advised he stay at home to recuperate for six weeks."

    One lane of the A34 Stone Road southbound in Staffordshire remains closed whilst emergency services deal with a speed camera that's been damaged.

    The Staffordshire force said it was called to deal with reports of the "criminal damage" at Tittensor.

    More than 300 Birmingham bin workers have started the first of a series of strikes in a dispute with the council.

    It stems from claims some staff have been "blacklisted" for taking part in industrial action in 2017, when piles of rubbish were left on the streets.

    Picket lines are in place at four council refuse depots from 05:00 until 14:00, Unite said.

    A "reasonable" offer had been made to unions, Birmingham City Council said.
