    A woman needed surgery after suffering serious injuries to her hand when she was bitten by a dog, police said.

    West Mercia Police is appealing for information about the attack that happened on Worcester Road in Bromsgrove at about 16:00 on Sunday.

    The force said the woman, in her 60s, has been in hospital since it happened.

    Officers said the dog involved was described as a French Bulldog and officers want to speak to the couple believed to have been in charge it as part of their investigations.

    A quarry in Shropshire could be extended if a planning application is given the green light by councillors.

    Condover Quarry, on the outskirts of Shrewsbury has been running for 55 years, but is expected to be exhausted this year.

    Hanson's, which operates the site, wants a 10.6-hectare expansion to the south of the current quarry in a bid to extract another 2.85 million tonnes of sand and gravel over the next 14-15 years.

    After this time, it said the site would be returned to a mix of open water, a conservation area and agricultural use.

    A charity that passes on surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants to people in need in the West Midlands says it's hoping to provide an extra 500,000 meals this year.

    Fareshare, external has just finished refitting its Birmingham warehouse and installed a new chiller in its depot.

    Currently, 170 charities and community groups receive food from the charity, but it says it's now hoping to recruit another 60 charities and feed an extra 6,000 people every week.

    Here's something that might make you smile on a Wednesday.

    Birmingham comedian Joe Lycett wrote to the city's Lord Mayor to ask if she would unveil the new extension to his kitchen, sharing the email on Twitter.

    But, sadly, he received a reply on behalf of Councillor Yvonne Mosquito , externalto say she could not attend "private events".

    But it did wish the Great British Sewing Bee judge all the best with his "grand opening".

    You've paid tribute on the BBC Midlands' Facebook page to singer Roger Charlery, known as Ranking Roger, who has died at the age of 56.

    Born in Birmingham, he's best known as a vocalist with The Beat who spearheaded the two-tone movement and enjoyed several top 10 hits.

    An MP's called for a ban on the use of sky lanterns across England after a series of major fires.

    Labour MP for High Peak Ruth George highlighted a devastating fire in Smethwick six years ago, thought to be caused by a Chinese lantern, as she introduced her Ten Minute Rule Bill in the House of Commons this afternoon.

    The blaze involved 100,000 tonnes of plastic recycling material in July 2013 and saw more than 200 firefighters tackle it.

    Sixteen firefighters were injured and at the time crews described the fire as the largest they had seen in the West Midlands.

    Ms George also highlighted a planned sky lantern festival in the Peak District last summer which was eventually cancelled after intense pressure over fire fears.

    It followed a series of wildfires which swept the Peak District during the long heatwave.

    MPs voted to accept her bill this afternoon and she and other MPs will now draw up the proposed legislation so it can be debated in the future.

    Worcester Warriors' fly-half Duncan Weir says the squad is taking a huge lift from the way they ground out their win at Bristol Bears last weekend.

    Warriors hung on to narrowly win the match despite seeing out a tense final 10 minutes with 14 men after Ben Te'o picked up their second yellow card.

    The side is now three points above bottom side Newcastle although they now have a weekend off from Premiership action as they host Harlequins in the European Challenge Cup.

    A man has been jailed for life, with a minimum of 20 years, after being found guilty of stabbing his cousin to death.

    Christopher Harm, from Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene in Engine Lane, Brierley Hill, Dudley, at about 01:00 on 13 October 2018.

    Glen Elvin, 25, of no fixed address, was convicted of murder following a nine-day trial and sentenced on Wednesday.

    West Midlands Police said the men had been in a group travelling around the country in a van putting up posters advertising a circus.

    They had been out drinking at the nearby Waterfront pub the night before, when a disagreement between Elvin and Mr Harm led to a fight, the force said.

    Mr Harm (pictured above) died from a single stab wound to the heart, it added.

  11. Wards reopen after Norovirus outbreakpublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2019

    All wards at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital have reopened after recent cases of norovirus.

    Some bays will remain closed, however, the hospital trust says.

    Norovirus, is a stomach bug,also known as the winter vomiting bug, that causes sickness and diarrhoea. It can be unpleasant, but usually goes away in about two days.

    Wards 24, 27 and 28 at RSH have been fully closed after five cases were confirmed.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust said on Twitter: "Norovirus is still present in the community so we would ask anyone visiting our hospitals to please take every precaution to prevent the spread of infection."

    A Birmingham councillor has travelled to 10 Downing Street to deliver a letter urging government to fund the retro-fitting of sprinklers in tower blocks in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

    More than 70 people died in the huge fire in Grenfell Tower, in London, in June 2017.

    In England, sprinklers are only a legal requirement in new residential blocks taller than 30 metres, but fire services have called for more buildings to be fitted with sprinklers.

    Birmingham councillor Sharon Thompson, responsible for housing in the city, was in Downing Street yesterday to hand over a letter signed by 15 councils across the country calling on government to "prioritise the safety of residents living in tower blocks" and fund "this essential fire safety work".

    Solihull, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Coventry and Sandwell councils were also signatories to the letter.

    Speaking in February, Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said sprinklers were "one of many fire safety measures".

  14. Railway station 'needs disabled access'published at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2019

    An MP has called for disabled access at Ledbury railway station as a matter of urgency.

    Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions, Conservative MP for North Herefordshire Bill Wiggin praised the government's record in getting disabled people back into work.

    But he said disabled commuters currently faced a 20-minute journey to Hereford "so they can simply get out of the train".

    He described the government's Access for All programme, which provides funding for improve disables facilities at stations as "too slow".

    In response, Theresa May said it was important disabled people could travel to and from work "easily, conveniently and confidently".

    She said extra funding was being made available and Ledbury was one of a number of stations being considered as part of that, with an announcement expected "shortly".

    A man has been attacked by a group of up to seven men in a "frightening" carjacking in Edgbaton, Birmingham.

    The victim, in his 40s, was knocked to the floor and hit across the head before the group took the keys to his Mercedes, police said.

    It happened in Calthorpe Road at around 20:30 on Monday and West Midlands Police has released images of men it would like to trace following the incident.

    The man looking to break his own land speed record says he hopes he will be able to make the attempt soon.

    The Bloodhound supersonic car is back under new management after the project went into administration last year.

    Andy Green, from Atherstone, has held the record for more than 20 years and says there's been a lot of interest in the new vehicle.
