    Designs have been drawn up to show how Birmingham's Victorian Lock-Up in Steelhouse Lane could look if turned into a police museum.

    Funding has been awarded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help West Midlands Police put together plans.

    The displays will tell stories of prisoners and staff, including the real "peaky blinders" who were held in the building and how the original "Lock-Up matrons" from 1895 formed some of the very first women in policing.

    Insp Steve Rice, who works on the WMP Heritage Project, said: "It’s exciting to see how the museum might work and the designers [Campbell and Co] have set aside plenty of space for us to host school parties, groups and maybe even a themed wedding."

  7. Appeal as man dies following hit-and-run crashpublished at 18:47 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2019

    A man has died four weeks after a hit-and-run collision, police said.

    Reginald William Nend was hurt following a crash involving his Vauxhall Astra and a Renault Laguna in Yardley Wood Road at around 10:00 on 14 February.

    The 77-year-old was taken to hospital, but died on 17 March and police have renewed their appeal for information.

    In tribute, Mr Nend's family said: "He was the kindest man who would do anything for anybody, nothing was too much trouble."

    Two men, a 41-year-old arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and drink driving have both been released while inquiries continue.

    A group of sheep have been rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in a pond at an old quarry., external

    Cheshire Fire Service says firefighters found the animals couldn't get out of the silt pond at Dingle Bank Quarry, Lower Withington, near Congleton.

    It took around three hours for the 13 sheep to be safely rescued using an inflatable floating pathway.

    The exit slip road at junction three of the M6 southbound at Nuneaton has now reopened following an earlier lorry crash.

    Emergency repairs were needed on a barrier which was damaged in the collision.

    But Highways England said motorists should still expect some delays.

    The Birmingham-born singer was best known as a vocalist with The Beat who had several hits between 1979 and 1983.

    Two-tone, which began in the late 70s with Coventry band The Specials, fused musical styles such as punk, ska, reggae and new wave together.

    It was also a statement against racial divides in British society.

    A bus users group in Shropshire has hit out at proposals to reduce services across the county.

    Shropshire Council has begun a public consultation into plans to save more than £450,000 a year by a combination of cutting some services it subsidises and reducing the frequency of others.

    Emergency services are at the scene of a fire involving tyres in Wednesbury.

    West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Woden Road East at 15:33 and had three appliances in attendance.

    People needing emergency care in Walsall will need to head to The Manor Hospital after April 12.

    Walsall Clinical Commissioning Group said the town centre urgent care centre was relocating to the hospital, to be closer to the main A&E.

  15. Man injured during break-in assaultpublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2019

    An 18-year-old man suffered injuries to his leg during a burglary in Nuneaton last night, police said.

    About 23:45, two men broke into a house on Pallett Drive.

    They assaulted the man and a quantity of cash and a gold chain was stolen.

    The offenders then left the scene on foot in the direction of St Nicolas Park Drive, Warwickshire Police said.

    They are said to have been dressed in dark clothing, wearing gloves and balaclavas and it is reported one of them was holding an item, believed to be a hammer.

    A major refurbishment of Coventry's Belgrade Theatre has been given the green light.

    The city council granted listed building consent this week, which will enable the theatre to carry out phase one of its £4.8m redevelopment.

    Belgrade Theatre's head of development, Helen Hotchkiss, said: "With Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture less than two years away, the 61-year-old theatre is in need of some refurbishment in order to be a sparkling gem for 2021 and beyond."

    The project, which will be completed by September 2020, has already secured £3.7m funding from Coventry City Council; the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, plus Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

    A public-facing fundraising campaign titled Play Your Part has been launched to raise the remaining £600,000 needed.

    Struggling Midlands non-league club Nuneaton Borough have had a winding-up petition against them adjourned until 1 May.

    Boro, who are bottom of National League North, owe £32,000 to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

    They now have a short hearing on Thursday, at which they hope to get a validation order allowing them to clear that debt by the end of the week.

    Boro are now free to play Saturday's scheduled fixture at FC United of Manchester. But they are 20 points adrift of safety with only seven games left.

    If Jimmy Ginnelly's side lose, they would be relegated to the seventh tier of English football and they would be anyway if Guiseley win at home to York City.
