    Local Democracy Reporting Service

An independent school in Shropshire has won permission to build a car park on playing fields which were said to be the site of the battle which gave Oswestry its name.

Oswestry School said the 46 spaces were needed to ease traffic problems and make surrounding roads safer when children arrive and leave.

    Car park

The school was given permission for a 36-space car park in 2012 and a report prepared for members of Shropshire Council's planning committee said the additional new car park would allow it to improve access to both through the creation of another entrance.

In its application the school had argued the Battle of Maserfield, in which Oswald of Northumbria was killed, could have taken place elsewhere in the country.

Steven Beeson, of Sparkhill, Birmingham, failed to stop for officers after they were alerted to a pick-up truck towing a caravan - both of which were stolen - on the A34 in Staffordshire last June.

The truck and caravan almost crashed with a lorry at the entrance to junction 15 on the M6 southbound, before speeding through roadworks until it was finally stopped.

If second from bottom Notts County win all six of their remaining games they will finish with 54 points, so another 11 for Port Vale would guarantee safety, but the actual target is likely to be lower.

    Quote Message

Finishing the season with 55 points or more, I still think we need another three points, but we need to aim for higher than that really, we need to try to finish off the season and get over fifty points if we can."

  18. HMP Birmingham move welcomed by unionpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 2 April 2019

Bringing HMP Birmingham back under public control should be the start of a journey that sees the termination of all private sector contracts in English prisons, a union has said.

Unite the union said it welcomed the decision that a contract with G4S to run HMP Birmingham has been terminated.

It said there are a number of private sector contracts across the estimated 118 prisons in England and Wales, with 14 managed by private companies.

"Once again, the outsourcing model being imposed on public services has been found to be flawed," said Unite regional officer Caren Evans.

In a written statement, Prisons Minister Rory Stewart said the government continues to believe that prisoners and the public benefit from "a mixed economy of provisions".

"We will of course be learning lessons from Birmingham which must support our approach to contracting for private prisons in the future," he added.
