    The former Aston Villa manager Billy McNeill has died.

    The 79-year-old, who was best known for his time as a player at Celtic, was the first Briton to lift the European Cup. He was the Glasgow club's captain when it beat Inter Milan 2-1 in 1967.

    He was manager at Villa Park between 1986 and 1987.

    Celtic said he died on Monday night "surrounded by his family and loved ones".

  2. Canoeist dies in endurance racepublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 23 April 2019

    A Worcestershire canoeist has died while taking part in an endurance race, its organisers have said.

    The man, in his 50s who is yet to be named and was a member of Worcester Canoe Club, died yesterday towards the end of the Devizes to Westminster Race.

    The race directors said they were "saddened" to report a paddler had died in the final stages, adding that they were co-operating with the official investigation into the incident.

    The sport's governing body in the UK, British Canoeing, said the whole community was "deeply upset" to hear the "tragic" news.

    A Stafford food bank and homeless charity is increasing the number of days it opens each week because of the demands on its services, it says.

    The House of Bread on Browning Street currently provides hot meals for more than a 120 people a week.

    But from today, they'll be open three days a week and appealing for more volunteers and donations.

  4. Safety warning over quarry swimmingpublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 23 April 2019

    As the hot weather continues an urgent safety message has gone out reminding people not to swim in cold water areas.

    Six years ago two young men died after getting into trouble while swimming at Gullet Quarry in Worcestershire.

    Fencing and large warning signs have been put up telling people not to enter.

    The Royal Life Saving Society says because the water is so cold, swimmers can suffer shock causing them to swallow a large amount of water.

  5. Man due in court over Stoke-on-Trent murderpublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 23 April 2019

    A man from Stoke-on-Trent will appear before magistrates later charged with murdering a woman.

    It follows the discovery of a body at a flat on Fletcher Road on Saturday afternoon.

  7. New police powers to tackle anti-social behaviourpublished at 07:50 British Summer Time 23 April 2019

    A new police power to help officers tackle gangs in Coventry has moved a step closer.

    The PSPO, otherwise known as a public space protection order, would cover St Michael's Ward and parts of the city centre.

    It would enable the police to ask groups of two or more people who're behaving in an anti-social manner to move on and if they fail to comply they could be fined up to £100.

    Steve Bowen, who lives in Hilllfields, said: "I think these orders will be a very useful tool not only for the police but people who live in these areas."

  9. Taxi driver go-slow protest in Birminghampublished at 07:20 British Summer Time 23 April 2019

    There could be chaos on Birmingham's roads later as taxi drivers stage rush-hour protests between 08:00 and 10:00 BST over plans for a Clean Air Zone.

    The council is planning to introduce a charge for the most polluting vehicles which could set drivers back £8 a day to enter the city centre.

    Raja Amin, from the RMT union, said: "The charge does not clear the air at all, as far as we're concerned."

    Birmingham City Council says it's been given nearly £15m from the government to support Hackney carriage and private hire drivers to buy new vehicles or upgrade their taxis.
