The pair were wearing yellow jackets with the party logo on the back and he believes the attack was politically-motivated.

The group appeared at Leicester Crown Court today and pleaded guilty to one count of robbery over the raid at Goldust Jewellers in Market Place.

Leicestershire Police said the men went into the shop about 11:00 on 25 January armed with two machetes and what appeared to be a double-barreled shotgun, though the weapon was never recovered.

They threatened two members of staff before taking up to £80,000 worth of jewellery, and drove off in a BMW X5.

The force said witnesses noted the registration plate and a short time later a car matching that description crashed in Market Bosworth, with reports of four men running off. They were eventually arrested by armed police.

Det Con Jack Thomas, said: "The four men thought they could try and make a quick financial gain and make off without being caught.

“But, thanks to staff and members of the public who were nearby – as well as our armed officers – the men were arrested within an hour of committing their crime."

They will be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on 21 May.

  7. Parties offer different visions for Hereford trafficpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 24 April 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Next week's local authority elections could decide the future of Hereford's proposed bypass, with the competing political parties at odds over how to proceed.

The Conservative Party is supporting the £136m relief road.

"We are committed to delivering a bypass in both Hereford and Leominster to help ease congestion and improve air quality," the manifesto says.

Labour oppose the current bypass plans and calls for more public transport, free park and ride facilities and rail companies brought back under public control.

    Ballot box

The Liberal Democrats say they would re-route the existing A49 by completing the bypass around Hereford, saying it would lead to better cycle routes through the city and lower carbon emissions.

The Green Party says it would scrap major projects such as the bypass and look at addressing the causes of congestion instead.

And the Independents say they want more river crossings and improved rail services, bus services, cycling routes, pathways and park and ride services.

It’s Our County says new road building must always be a last resort and never a first option and the bypass would only take the 15% of through traffic out of the city and inflict huge environmental destruction.

While the coin is from the Royal Mint, the GMB's anger is targeted at the current owners of Wedgwood, the Fiskars Group, as the firm last month announced around 145 jobs could be cut.

At the time, the firm said it was looking to "reduce complexity across its operations" and would consult unions over the planned losses at its Barlaston site.

Having the unveiling of the £2 coin at the same site to celebrate Wedgwood's history was a "sick joke", the GMB says.

The Fiskars Group has been approached for a response.

They're protesting over planned new clean air zone charges, claiming funding from the city council to upgrade their cabs is not enough.

The authority said government funding would help support them.

The protest yesterday, when cabbies drove slowly through the city centre during the rush hour for two hours, caused long tailbacks, prompting police to say they'd have officers at today's demonstration.

The force said they'd "take appropriate action" if any motorists obstructed traffic but confirmed no fines have been issued over the two days, adding that they'll monitor future protests., external
