  13. 'No reason why BBC should not continue' free TV licencespublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

Households with people over 75 are entitled to a free TV licence.

But the government-funded scheme, which is expected to cost £745m by 2021-22, comes to an end in 2020 and it will be for the BBC to decide whether to continue it, and in what form it will exist.

Campaigners and MPs have warned hundreds of thousands of over-75s will lose out if the free scheme is ended, blaming the government for devolving responsibility to the BBC.

Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, Labour's Jim Cunningham (Coventry South), pictured above, said: "During the general election the prime minister gave a manifesto commitment to retain free TV licences and bus passes. Does she still stand by them?"

Mrs May replied: "We do stand by the commitments we made. Of course we are changing the arrangements for the TV licences, that is going to the BBC.

"But there is no reason why the BBC, with the money available to it, is not able to continue that."
