The move led to criticism on Twitter, including by Jay1 who said he had wanted to perform in "my own city".

The "disappointing" closure was taken for safety reasons after the tent reached capacity and barriers were breached, the council said.

"The safety of all people attending the festival is our number one priority, and thankfully no one was seriously hurt,” said Abdul Salam Khan, the councillor in charge of events.

The research by Kings College London found the impact of air pollution would lead to a higher loss of life in the city than others such as Manchester.

An eight-year-old child born in 2011 may die between two to seven months early if exposed over their lifetime to projected future pollution concentrations, it said.

The study looked at the combined impact of two pollutants - particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide - two of the leading causes of poor health from air pollution.

It calculated the annual health cost of air pollution in Birmingham as between £190m to £470m per year.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: "Air quality has improved significantly in recent years, but air pollution continues to shorten lives which is why we are taking concerted action to tackle it".
