    A boy, believed to be 17, has been stabbed in the Kingstanding area of Birmingham this afternoon.

    West Midlands Police said officers were called at around 15:00 and have sealed off an area around College Road.

    The boy has been taken to hospital with "serious injuries".

    The RAC has warned of delays of up to 90 minutes on some roads over the weekend.

    Some of the longest delays are likely to include the the M40 between Warwickshire and Oxfordshire and the M5 through Worcestershire.

    Congestion will continue until Monday, with the M6 between Birmingham and Wolverhampton predicted to see speeds down to 17mph in the afternoon.

    Drivers were urged to check their oil, coolant and tyre tread and pressure to avoid breakdowns adding to delays.

    Waleed Khan was just 12 when terrorists attacked his school in Pakistan.

    Militants from the Pakistani Taliban attacked his army-run school in Peshawar, killing at least 141, many of them children.

    He was shot in the face six times, once in the leg and once in the hand.

    He was eventually brought to Birmingham for specialist medical care, where he started school and continues to study - also becoming a member of the UK Youth Parliament.

    A British diver who helped to save 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in Thailand has been honoured by Coventry University.

    Rick Stanton, from Coventry, was one of the first rescuers to reach the boys and their football coach who were stranded in the flooded Tham Luang cave in 2018.

    The retired firefighter was recognised for his "dedication to public service and bravery in the line of duty," and accepted an honorary degree making him an honorary Doctor of Technology.

    He said: “I'm extremely proud to be awarded in this manner by my local university, and recognised for the innovative concepts I have developed for practical application."

    He has also received awards from the West Midlands Fire Service, the Royal Humane Society, the Pride of Britain Awards, Coventry’s Award of Merit as well as and an MBE and the George Medal.

    Some of Worcester's most famous faces could be immortalised on traffic roundabouts around the city.

    The city council is offering to pay an artist £10,000 to create a number of sculptures, remembering figures such as the cricketer Basil D'Oliveira, music hall performer Vesta Tilley (pictured below) and aviator Sheila Scott.

    Other suggestions for historic figures who deserve some recognition include King John, who is buried at Worcester Cathedral, and the Grand National winning racehorse Pineau de Re.

    The council has a £100,000 fund to create works of art around the city and has also considered creating a large piece of public art, as a focal point for visitors.

    Human bones found in a septic tank are that of an adult female, a post-mortem examination has concluded.

    West Mercia Police are probing the disappearance of a woman from Kempsey in 1982.

    The bones, found on Friday 12 July, will now be forensically tested to try to obtain DNA for identification, police said.

    Det Ch Insp Carl Moore said although the find was "concerning for the community" and there was "speculation surrounding the remains", further tests could be a "lengthy process".

    Australian Andrew McDonald is to coach the Birmingham-based men's side in the new competition, The Hundred, in 2020.

    The 38-year-old, who achieved a domestic coaching treble down under last winter, will take charge of the as-yet unnamed team.

    He will be assisted by former New Zealand Test spinner Daniel Vettori.

    Warwickshire first-team coach Jim Troughton and Worcestershire counterpart Alex Gidman will also be part of the backroom team.

  16. Seventeen-year-old arrested after 'serious' crashpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    A man is being questioned by police following a serious crash in Solihull last night, police say.

    A 65-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the crash involving two vehicles at the junction with Marshall Lake Road and Straford Road in Shirley at about 23:30.

    The man remains in a critical but stable condition.

    The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

  17. Mum's sepsis death 'hours after giving birth to twins'published at 13:50 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    The family of a woman who died hours after giving birth to twins are pursuing a negligence case against the hospital trust.

    Sophie Burgess, from Telford, died at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital in 2015 from sepsis and pre-eclampsia after a three-hour delay in transferring her to intensive care, lawyers said.

    In a statement, the hospital trust said it offered its "condolences and regret for the circumstances" which led to the death of the 19-year-old.

    "The lessons identified from our investigation have been shared within the trust and continue to help us to identify and manage sepsis as early as possible.”

    Solicitors for the family Lanyon Bowdler said: "The trust said a delay in transferring her to intensive care and failure to provide the correct management to treat her deteriorating condition contributed to Sophie’s death."

    It said "opportunities were missed to provide Sophie with the urgent specialist treatment she needed".

    The Doctor Who, Buffy and Stargate stars are appearing at the Telford International Centre on 7 and 8 December, after the organisers decided they needed a bigger venue for their winter event.
