    There's five miles of queuing traffic on the M1 southbound after a crash closed the carriageway from J18 to J16.

    Motorists are being diverted away while an accident investigation is carried out.

    The M45 eastbround in Warwickshire is closed for traffic management from the A45 Daventry Road to J17 for Dunchurch and Coventry.

  13. 'England have to raise game for Australia Ashes'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    England have to "raise their game" for a "hard and tough" Ashes series - which kicks off at Edgbaston - says director of men's cricket Ashley Giles.

    England won their first men's World Cup at Lord's this month but were bowled out for 85 in the first innings against Ireland on their return to Test cricket.

    The hosts ultimately won by 143 runs, but Giles said he hoped the Test had "given us a bit of a jolt".

    Australia hold the Ashes after their 4-0 victory down under in 2018-19, but England have not lost a series on home soil since 2001.

    The first Test of the five-match Ashes series begins on Thursday at Edgbaston.

  14. Legal challenges to PCC fire takeover thrown outpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    Legal challenges against decisions to transfer control of fire services to Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) have been thrown out.

    Shropshire, Hereford and Worcester and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire and Rescue Authorities were all seeking judicial review of the ruling by then Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

    On Monday, all three cases were dismissed by the High Court.

    West Mercia PCC John Campion welcomed the ruling, but questioned why taxpayers' money was used by the fire authorities to fund the legal challenge.

    He said there were no plans to merge Shropshire and Hereford & Worcester fire services, but by combining the back-office "machinery" it would make them more "joined up" with the police and achieve better "economies of scale".

    A revolver has been seized after police stopped a car in West Bromwich.

    Acting on intelligence, firearms officers pulled over the Mercedes in Hollyhedge Road at around 03:00, West Midlands Police said.

    The gun, a baton and a number of knives were recovered.

    Three men, aged 18, 22 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and remain in police custody.

    A children’s care agency in Wolverhampton is hoping to expand to provide more services in the city.

    Progress Care, based in Bilston, specialises in looking after vulnerable children and young adults.

    The firm has submitted plans for a two-storey extension on each side of its existing building on Millfields Road, to create non-residential day care for pre-school youngsters and children with learning difficulties as well as additional conference and training facilities.

    The company had previously applied to carry out the work 10 years ago and was granted permission, but the scheme didn’t go ahead and that approval expired.

  17. Port Vale sign former Yeovil Town wingerpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    League Two side Port Vale have signed former Yeovil Town winger Rhys Browne on a one-year deal.

    The 23-year-old was released by the Glovers at the end of last season following their relegation from the Football League and has been on trial.

    Browne, who has played for Aldershot, Grimsby and on loan at Macclesfield, made 30 appearances last term.
