  1. Coventry City: Return to Ricoh 'possible'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    There may be an opportunity for Coventry City to return to playing at the Ricoh Arena "in the not too distant future," said the club's chief executive.

    Coventry City will groundshare at Birmingham City's St Andrew's for the 2019-20 season after failing to agree a deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

    The club's owners Sisu are in dispute with the city council over the 2014 sale of the Ricoh Arena to Premiership rugby union side Wasps.

    "Everybody associated with the club wants to play in Coventry," said Dave Boddy.

    "It was not possible" for this season, he added.

    "We were forced into making the decision that we made but it would be fair to say there is still opportunity to the Ricoh hopefully in the not too distant future".

    Coventry previously shared Northampton Town's Sixfields Stadium during the 2013-14 season before agreeing a return to the Ricoh in August 2014.

    One of the "greatest relay swims" - that's how Great Britain's men's 4x100m winning performance has been described, earning Adam Peaty his third championship gold.

    Peaty, James Guy, Luke Greenbank and Duncan Scott won in South Korea with a new European record of 3:28.10.

    Scott swam the last leg as GB won ahead of the USA, while Russia took bronze.

    Heaping further praise on the team, Britain's former world champion Karen Pickering said: "Duncan Scott on that anchor leg - he could smell victory, he was chasing Nathan Adrian down. He found something so special to take that victory and deny USA another gold medal."

    Peaty, from Uttoxeter, who won four medals overall, said: "For me, that's better than Olympic gold and anything else, as when you do it as a team, and the fact the Americans have never been beaten in this event I don't think, it's just amazing."

  3. Woman's death 'unexplained'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    The death of a woman in Stoke-on-Trent yesterday is being treated as unexplained, police say.

    Officers were called by paramedics to a property on Sneyd Street in Cobridge at about 18:30 where the woman was said to be in cardiac arrest.

    Medics tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Comedian Joe Lycett has raised thousands of pounds for charity after Birmingham's former Lord Mayor officially opened his kitchen extension.

    In May, Yvonne Mosquito cut the ribbon at the ceremony at his home in Kings Heath.

    Proceeds from a raffle allowing people to attend were given to the Lord Mayor of Birmingham's Charity.

    Lycett will hand over a cheque for £3,000 later today.

    Annie musical actress, Jodie Prenger, has visited Birmingham Dog’s Home to meet two dogs named after stars from the show.

    Both Annie and Sandy are currently being cared for by the centre.

    Jodie (pictured on the right) is currently playing Miss Hannigan in Annie at Birmingham Hippodrome.

    The centre rescues and rehomes lost and abandoned dogs, caring for 2,253 dogs last year.

  6. Telford CSE: 'Unbelievable council turned down funding'published at 12:02 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    There's been criticism of the former Conservative administration of Telford and Wrekin Council, after it was reported that money - which could have helped train professionals to spot the signs of sexual grooming - was turned down, almost 10 years ago.

    The Sunday Mirror claimed that the £150,000 - offered as part of a European initiative to crack down on violence against women and children - was rejected, external, because the authority was concerned it would highlight the problems of exploitation in the borough.

    Labour Councillor Angela McClements tweeted, external that it was "unbelievable" the money had been turned down by the previous administration and said she "knew absolutely nothing about this as an opposition councillor in 2010".

    In a statement, the Conservative group on the council, led by Andrew Eade, said it would be "highly improper to pass comment at this time, with the imminent commencement of the Independent Telford CSE Inquiry".

    It added that it "fought hard" for the inquiry and would be giving evidence.

    Stoke City are waiting to find out the severity of an ankle injury sustained by captain Ryan Shawcross in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Leicester.

    Shawcross, 31, was hurt while making a sliding clearance in the first half and was treated for several minutes before being carried off on a stretcher.

    Potters boss Nathan Jones told BBC Radio Stoke: "There's nothing official yet so we won't speculate.

    "We think it's something reasonably serious - how serious, we don't know."

    The ribbon is being cut today at two factory-made homes in Coventry in a new approach to house building.

    The parts were made off-site and transported by truck to Willenhall, before they were assembled into two and three-bed houses.

    The homes are part of a pilot scheme by housing association WM Housing Group.

    Coventry City Council said modular homes could address the scarcity of housing in the city.

    There are plans to erect a memorial to a student paramedic who died in a crash while in the back of an ambulance.

    Burton and Uttoxeter MP Andrew Griffiths says he has met the 31-year-old's family, who feel a memorial would be a fitting tribute.

    Paramedics lined the path to the church in Stretton where Ms Minshall's funeral was held last week and West Midlands Ambulance Service said she had "had an amazing career ahead".

    Short of form throughout the World Cup, Guptill looked back to his destructive best in his 31-ball knock at New Road.

    Alex Lees's 44 helped the visitors post a competitive-looking 181-8, but Worcestershire's opening pair Guptill and Riki Wessels were half-way towards their target before they had even reached the end of the powerplay.

    Wessels struck five sixes and eight fours, while Guptill put his recent lack of form behind him to continuously plant the Durham bowlers into the stands.

    Thunderstorms and outbreaks of heavy rain tomorrow may bring the chance of flooding with possible travel disruption, the Met Office is warning.

    Heavy rain is expected to spread across the region with a yellow warning in place from 03:00 to midnight on Tuesday.

    Damage to buildings could be caused by flood water, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, it said.

    Three properties have been damaged by a fire which started in an oil tank in Oswestry.

    Crews were initially called shortly before 02:30 to a house in Weston.

    Two homes and a timber shed were affected, said Shropshire fire service. It added that a "significant" investigation was under way.

    A man is due in court today accused of offences including kidnap and the attempted rape of a girl, police say.

    The 38-year-old was arrested on Friday after the incident which happened in Cheddleton, Staffordshire, earlier this month.

    The man from the Leek area has been charged with kidnap with intent to commit a sexual offence, attempted rape and assault.

    He will appear before magistrates at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

  17. Flood warnings issued after heavy rainpublished at 09:22 British Summer Time 29 July 2019

    Flood warnings have been issued for the River Anker at Mancetter, Witherley and Atherstone in Warwickshire after heavy rain over the weekend.

    There are also several flood alerts in place across Staffordshire, Shropshire and Warwickshire, with heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast for Tuesday.

    Birmingham's Bullring owner Hammerson has revealed a loss of £319m in the six months to end of June

    It follows a £55.7m profit in the same time last year for the firm, which also owns the Grand Central, Telford Forge and Rugby's Elliot's Field shopping centres.

    The news comes amid a tough time for the UK retail sector and Hammerson's headline loss was mainly due to a £423m net revaluation loss on its property portfolio, particularly in the UK.

    Net rental income dropped 12.3% to £156.6m.

    Like-for-like, net income in the UK dropped 6.8%, affected by Company Voluntary Arrangements and administrations leaving shops empty.

    Two men arrested on suspicion of the murder of a 21-year-old who was stabbed have been released, police say.

    The victim was attacked on Force Road in Darlaston, Walsall on Wednesday, but died on Saturday afternoon.

    A 19-year-old arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Friday was released on police bail, said West Midlands Police.

    Investigations are continuing, the force said.
