    The annual Armistice Day Service of Remembrance has been held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

    It took place at the Armed Forces Memorial and it was also relayed on a large screen in Heroes' Square, as well as across the UK on TV.

    It was one of dozens of Armistice Day services across the Midlands, as thousands of people observed a two-minute silence, not just at events, but in offices and other workplaces.

    Thousands of people gathered for Bedworth's annual Armistice Day parade.

    A service was held at the War Memorial in Bedworth's Coventry Road Cemetery after the parade through the town centre.

    The parade has been held every year since 1921, thought to be the only one in the UK to take place on this date every year.

  4. Weather warning for rain issuedpublished at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    Homes and businesses could be flooded and travel disrupted by heavy rain across the West Midlands the Met Office is warning.

    A yellow warning for rain is in place for parts of Staffordshire until 12:00 on Tuesday.

    A wider warning for Thursday, external covers the whole of the West Midlands.

    Eleven flood warnings and many more alerts have also been issued after recent wet weather.

  5. Appeal after woman dies in crashpublished at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    Officers are appealing for information after an 82-year-old woman was killed in a crash in Wolverhampton.

    The two-car collision happened at the junction of Penn Road and Goldthorn Hill just before 19:00 on Sunday night.

    The 37-year-old driver of the second car remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

    Anyone who witnessed the crash is being encouraged to contact West Midlands Police.

  6. Children in Need: Rickshaw Challenge passes throughpublished at 11:21 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    A team of six young people and the BBC One Show's Matt Baker are on an eight-day challenge for Children in Need.

    They're cycling 400 miles from Holyhead to London and will be passing through Shropshire and Cheshire today.

    The team stayed in Oswestry overnight and set to arrive in Crewe later.

    The jury at the inquest of Evha Jannath has retired to consider its verdict.

    The 11-year-old drowned after falling from a ride at Drayton Manor Park in Staffordshire in May 2017.

    An inquest at South Staffordshire Coroner's Court heard that she was unsupervised when she fell from the theme park ride to her death during a school trip.

    Two-minute silences are about to take place at events across the Midlands.

    The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and Birmingham's Centenary Square are among the biggest events in the country, but there are dozens of events taking place across the region.

    Today marks 100 years since the first Armistice Day was marked in the wake of World War One, making this a particularly poignant moment.

  11. Armistice Day marked at National Memorial Arboretumpublished at 10:32 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is at the centre of Armistice Day commemorations this morning.

    The annual service in Alrewas will be attended by the Duke of Kent, as well as veterans and lead figures from politics.

    Today marks exactly 100 years since the first Armistice Day silence was observed, on 11 November 1919.

    The Royal British Legion's annual Field of Remembrance opened at the National Memorial Arboretum last week

    The tribute honours those who have died in conflict and will remain open to visitors until 17 November.

    Other events taking place across the region include a ceremony at Birmingham's Centenary Square and the annual parade and service in Bedworth.

    They follow Remembrance Sunday events yesterday.

    A man has suffered serious injuries after his car was involved in a crash in Solihull earlier.

    He was taken to hospital after the incident on the A45 Stonebridge Island, Bickenhill shortly before 06:45.

    An increase in the charge for Coventry's Godiva Festival could be brought in as part of the city council's proposed budget.

    The local authority subsidised the festival to the value of £380,000 this year and an increase in a charge from £2 to £4.70 would reduce this to £200,000 the council said.

    A 4% council tax rise is also being proposed along with a reduction of road maintenance and increasing residential parking schemes to £20 a year.

    The report will be discussed on Tuesday and then put out to consultation.

  16. Woman dies in two-car crashpublished at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    A woman has died after a crash in Wolverhampton on Sunday night.

    The driver was taken to hospital after the collision at the junction of Coalway Road, Penn Road and Goldthorn Hill in Penn just after 20:30, said the ambulance service.

    She died a short time later.

    The other driver, a man, declined ambulance assessment and was discharged on scene, it said.

    The proportion of people travelling between London and Glasgow by rail rather than air has reached a record level, according to Virgin Trains.

    Virgin Trains has run services on the West Coast Main Line through the West Midlands since March 1997 but the franchise is being handed to First Trenitalia on 8 December.

    In the 12 months to July 2019, 29% of passengers chose to travel with the train company rather than fly.

    The figures released by Virgin Trains show the rise was driven by a 6% year-on-year increase in the number of passengers travelling between London and Glasgow by train, reaching 718,000.

    Wheelchair athlete Kare Adenegan set a season's best of 17.49 secs but lost out to Hannah Cockroft in the T34 100m title at the World Para-Athletics Championships on Sunday - winning silver.

    "I came here thinking 'what if I could be world champion?', and I went into the race with that mindset," The Coventry athlete said.

    "I said I was going to give it everything I have got, and whatever happens, I've got to be happy. Hannah was the better athlete today.

    "I believe that you don't lose, you learn. I've learned a lot from this race."
