    Nine suspected illegal immigrants have been found in the back of a lorry in Shropshire.

    The discovery was made by Border Force on the A41 near Weston Park on Sunday.

    West Mercia Police said no-one had been injured and it was not revealing the nationalities of the people involved.

    Two Shifnal charity shops were burgled last night and the thieves took a safe, jewellery and keys.

    The Severn Hospice store said its safe contained cash the staff had saved up for their Christmas dinner.

    The Extra Care charity shop was also targeted and the staff from the Severn Hospice store have thanked local people for their support, including the cups of tea and slices of cake.

    They said the shop would have to close while locks were changed and the damage was repaired.

    A man who used "grotesque" levels of violence against vulnerable women has been jailed for 16 years and six months.

    In one "shocking" attack, a 40-year-old woman, a sex worker, was slashed across the face leaving her needing 42 stitches and permanently scarred, police said. , external

    Jordan Layne, of Grosvenor Road, Handsworth, also punched a woman and held a knife to her face and dragged another down an alleyway before robbing her of just £1.90 loose change, said the West Midlands force.

    The 28-year-old admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery and making threats with a knife and was sentenced on Monday at Birmingham Crown Court.

    Det Con Rich Marsh, said: "His victims were sex workers he was trying to control and make money from…and he was prepared to use grotesque levels against these vulnerable women."

    UPS staff at the Argos distribution centre at Barton under Needwood will start 16 days of strike action from 16 December.

    The Unite union says UPS workers voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action after a 10-month long dispute over pay.

    UPS says: "Discussions with Unite are ongoing and we remain hopeful that a mutually satisfactory agreement can be reached."

    A fault with the signalling system in the Kings Norton area is causing rail disruption between Birmingham New Street and Bromsgrove / Cheltenham Spa.

    The concert venue at Trentham Gardens could more than double in size under proposals being put forward by the estate.

    At the moment it can cater for 5,000 people, but there is a plan to extend it into the field next to the play area and maze.

    Shrewsbury Town manager Sam Ricketts has said "I still have a lot to learn", a year after taking the job.

    The 38-year-old joined from Wrexham and after guiding the club clear of relegation last season, he has taken them to 12th in League One this season.

    Crewe manager David Artell has accused some fans of "naivety" for thinking they should have beaten non-league Eastleigh in the FA Cup on Saturday.

    The game ended 1-1 and he felt some of the comments from supporters afterwards were unfair, saying: “We didn't deserve it on Saturday at all."

    Artell pointed to Eastleigh's strong home record and called it a "tough, tough place to go".

    But while he accepted they should have played better in the second half, he said: “To say we should have beaten them, just because they're a national league team, that's naivety on our supporters’ part."

  12. Firefighters called out at MoD base once every four dayspublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2019

    Firefighters were called out 88 times to the Donnington MoD base near Telford in the past year, but only two of those incidents were recorded as fires.

    All of the incidents, between November 2018 and November 2019, were attended by the Defence Fire and Rescue Service.

    And 18 were recorded as "fire alarm, good intent" and another 15 put down to technical errors.

    Other reasons for callouts, revealed after a Freedom of Information request, included cigarette smoke, vaping, steam from a laundry and burnt toast.

    The MoD said Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was not called.

    A man has admitted causing the death of rap artist Cadet, killed in a crash on the way to a gig in Staffordshire.

    The rapper, from south London, whose real name is Blaine Cameron Johnson, died on 9 February on Main Road, Wrinehill, on his way to Keele University.

    At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Jordan Birch, 23, of Grove Crescent, Woore, in Shropshire, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury by dangerous driving.

    He's set to be sentenced on 9 January.

  15. Driver taken to hospital after three-lorry crashpublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2019

    A lorry driver has been cut free from a vehicle after a three-lorry crash on the A50 in Staffordshire.

    He was taken to hospital suffering injuries not thought to be life-threatening, said the ambulance service.

    The road remains closed westbound, said Highways England.
