    Three people who've been campaigning against the clearance of woodland along the proposed HS2 route near Leamington Spa have been arrested.

    Confirming the trio were part of the Save Cubbington Woods Group, spokesperson Nikki Jones said members were calling for tree and hedge removal to be suspended amid fresh uncertainty on whether the high-speed rail plan would go ahead.

    Warwickshire Police said one person was arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass, and two detained on suspicion of a breach of the peace.

    The arrests were made on Church Road in Offchurch this morning.

    Holocaust Memorial Day takes place annually on 27 January – the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkena – and is organised by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

  4. Parents 'always thankful' to stem cell donorpublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2020

    The parents of an eight-year-old boy who underwent a stem cell transplant for his rare immune system disorder say they hope one day to thank his donor in person.

    Finley Hill, from Belbroughton, Worcestershire, was diagnosed in March 2019 with a condition affecting white blood cells' ability to clear infections.

    An appeal for a stem cell donor turned up a match in Brazil in September and Finley's treatment began at Birmingham Children's Hospital in November.

    Last month at the hospital he formally marked the end of his treatment. His story will feature on Inside Out West Midlands on BBC One this evening from 19:30.

    Finley's father Paul Hill said: "What can you say to someone that's saved my boy's life? How can I thank him?"

    A fire at a house in Cannock is being treated as arson by Staffordshire Police., external

    Fire crews were called on Saturday night to Cannock Road and believe the blaze started in the garage.

    They said everyone in the house managed to escape and no-one was hurt.

    People in parts of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire are being warned of slippery conditions due to ice this evening and overnight.

    The Met Office has put out a yellow weather alert , externalwhich runs from 19:00 until 10:00 on Tuesday.

    Thirty-eight people have been killed on smart motorways in the last five years, the government has told BBC Panorama.

    It is the first time that the total number of deaths has been reported.

    A government review, the results of which are due to be announced shortly, is expected to recommend reforms to improve safety.

    Eight-year-old Dev Naran was killed on a smart motorway when he was on his way home from visiting his critically-ill brother in Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    Mum Meera Naran told the programme that after the crash, Dev's body was then taken back to the hospital where his brother was being treated.

    "I had both my boys, one fighting for his life still and Dev just there. It wasn't right, my two sons, one really sick, and the healthy one left me."

    Shrewsbury Town will not face Liverpool's first-team players in their FA Cup fourth-round replay, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has said.

    The League One team came from 2-0 down to draw with the Premier League leaders on Sunday.

    At least four Premier League teams will need replays, which are scheduled for Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 February, meaning they will cut into the new mid-season break which runs between 2 and 16 February.

    "I said to the boys already two weeks ago that we will have a winter break, which means we will not be there," said Klopp.

    Coventry Cathedral has said it has been left "overwhelmed" by the support of the public after a priceless glass window was smashed during a robbery.

    The panel, hand carved by artist John Hutton, was damaged during the break-in on Thursday at about 23:30, police said.

    Hundreds of people have commented on the cathedral's Facebook page, external, where the cathedral posted: "Thank you to each and every one of you who has taken the time to share your well wishes and kind words following our earlier announcement.

    A woman remains in hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Birmingham on Sunday.

    The woman, in her 50s, suffered serious head injuries in the crash on St Martin's Street at the junction with Tennant Street, Five Ways, just before 17:00.

    A 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs has been released under investigation, says West Midlands Police.

    Officers are asking for witnesses to come forward.

    Worcester Wolves won the BBL Cup, beating Bristol Flyers 67-59 in a low-scoring final at Arena Birmingham.

    The couple got a rapturous reception from fans who were delighted to see the Birmingham-born performer on stage, so soon after revealing his Parkinson's diagnosis,

    But Sharon soon had the crowd in stitches, as she theatrically recited a list of artists she'd clearly never heard of before.

    As well as butchering names like Lil Baby and Young Thug, she took particular relish in lingering over song titles like "Ballin'" and "Drip Too Hard".
