    An appeal to raise £250,000 to support the Gloucestershire Warwickshire steam railway is close to reaching its target.

    It means a £190,000 invoice can be paid to carry out repairs to a collapsed embankment, damaged in a landslip.

    The appeal has passed £225,000 and contractors have been able to move back in, because of the easing of lockdown restrictions.

    The railway, which runs to Broadway, Worcestershire, would normally be starting running trains at this time of year and doesn't yet know when it will be able to reopen.

    The government has been asked why key workers and vulnerable people are being sent out of Stoke-on-Trent for testing, when there is a testing station at Stoke City's stadium.

    Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Abi Brown and Stoke-on-Trent North MP Jonathan Gullis have both written to Health Secretary Matt Hancock to complain that people are having to travel to Manchester Airport and beyond for Covid-19 tests.

    The Army has pulled out of a testing centre in Etruria and the bet365 Stadium is still reserved for the NHS and council workers.

    One man, 76-year-old Barrie Harrington from Normacot, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he had been offered tests in Belfast, Derry, Plymouth and Perth, but not Stoke-on-Trent.

    A Department of Health spokesman said: “As we tackle this virus we are determined to make it fast and simple for all eligible people who need a test to get a test.

    “In addition to setting up a nationwide network of drive-in testing sites, we have also introduced home-testing kit delivery and deployed mobile testing units operated by the armed forces."

    “1.4 million people have now been tested in the UK and the vast majority report no issues with the process.”

  10. 'Grenade' find given all-clearpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

    A suspected hand grenade found at a house in Shrewsbury this afternoon has turned out to be a harmless training device.

    It was discovered during a house clearance on Fairness Close and army bomb disposal experts were called out to check it over.

    People living in the Warwick area will be sent revised tax bills, because a council tax rise has had to be cancelled.

    The district council voted in February for a rise above the level that would trigger a referendum, arguing the extra money was needed for a "climate action fund".

    But the referendum had to be cancelled because of coronavirus.

    Instead, the council has agreed on a lower, 3% increase and the new bills will be sent out in the next few days.

    A 57-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening head injuries after a fight at a property in Redditch last night.

    West Mercia Police said officers were called to Lock Close at 20:00 and a man in his 20s from the town has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

    Plans to put a gym and cinema in Leamington's House of Fraser department store in Leamington have been shelved.

    It is due to close later this year and the proposal, which also included a range of offices and shops, had been approved by Warwick district councillors.

    But developers COREM Investment Management said there wasn't enough demand for the gym and cinema.

    Consultant James Beynon, who is representing the company, said there was interest in the shops and offices, so the plans have been altered to take out the gym and cinema and create more space for those elements instead.

    The grass in parks around Birmingham is being cut in 2m strips to help people keep a safe distance between each other.

    Birmingham City Council said it was expecting a "significant increase in visits" to its 591 parks and other green spaces and saw this as a simple visual guide.

    The council said the grass had been left uncut during lockdown, so there should be "a notable difference" where it has been cut into the channels.

  17. Human remains found on Gloucestershire roadsidepublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

    The main road between the Forest of Dean and Wales is currently closed after police discovered human remains.

    Gloucestershire Police say: "A woman from Birmingham aged in her 20s and a man from Wolverhampton aged in his 30s have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the investigation and remain in police custody."

    The A4136 will remain shut, at the bottom of the hill into Monmouth by the MayHill Hotel, and further up by the turning for the B4228 to Coleford while police conduct enquiries.

    A cordon is also in place on the far side of the Stowfield Quarry.

    The West Midlands mayor has said he's pleased to see industry start up again, but warned that it has to be done safely.

    In a series of tweets, Andy Street said: "While it’s important to start trying to reboot our economy, we must keep workers safe and adhere to guidelines."
