  5. Number of Covid cases at farm reaches 120published at 10:00 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

    BBC Hereford and Worcester

The number of people to have tested positive for coronavirus at a Herefordshire vegetable farm has now reached 120.

While the outbreak at Rook Row Farm in Mathon has put the county high up on the list of UK hot spots statistically, Public Health England says it's confident there is no risk to the wider community and it is continuing to test workers isolating at the site.

There is a voluntary lockdown at the farm, with five people deciding to leave. Seventy others have completed a period of quarantine, allowing them to also leave or return to work.

  6. Work to protect museum artefacts goes onpublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

Despite being closed to visitors, conservators at Birmingham Museums Trust have been working throughout lockdown to protect its artefacts.

As well as doing normal work caring for the museum's collections, environmental factors, which have changed during lockdown have meant extra care has been taken.

A particular problem, its staff said, have been pests.

Conservator Ben Corcoran said "damage to collections continues whether people are around or not.

"With there not being anyone on site and no one checking it as often, there has been a greater risk of pest infestations going unnoticed and causing more damage."

A taxidermy Collie dog at the Think Tank had to be treated after it suffered a moth infestation.

To restore it, the dog was vacuumed to remove cocoons and eggs and has now been sealed in a polythene bag ahead of being frozen at -40°C to kill any remaining pests, before it can be put back on display.

Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery is also part of a six-part audio series, The Caretakers, which is offering a glimpse into life for UK museum and gallery security staff and those maintaining buildings and collections during lockdown.

Documents from Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) show school bus operators may be asked to increase capacity while space on public transport remains limited due to Covid-19 rules.

Pupils in all year groups are being told to return to school full-time from the beginning of the autumn term, and schools are instructed to maintain social distancing “wherever possible” within buildings.

Government advice states pupils will not be required to keep two metres or “one metre plus apart” on dedicated school transport – used by more than 32,000 five to 18-year-olds in the West Midlands.

  9. Arts jobs 'at risk' as council makes cutspublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

It said it estimated the pandemic could cost it at least £2.5m and its worst affected area has been the arts and events service.

The council said it would keep the Assembly Rooms shut until at least next year as reopening with socially distanced audiences "will still not be an economically viable option".

Tamworth Castle is expected to reopen from 1 August and the arts team is working on organising new events such as a drive-in cinema.

But with several job roles at risk, the local authority has started a consultation on cuts, but said no final decision on redundancies would be made until that finishes.
