    Worcester City Council has earmarked £7,000, to see if city centre buildings could be heated using the River Severn, external.

    Water would be drawn through a network of pipes from either the river or the ground and pumped around many of the buildings.

    A report to the city council's environment committee on 21 July said the heat produced by the river would be the equivalent of 10,000 gas boilers.

    If the scheme is viable, it could help reduce emissions in the city.

    After being stabilised at the scene by paramedics, they said she was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, for more treatment.

  4. Motorway reopens after lorry firepublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 23 July 2020

    Congestion on the M6 in Warwickshire is starting to ease after a lorry fire in the early hours of this morning.

    The emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway between junction three and the M6 Toll junction at around 04:00 and this photo shows the extent of the damage.

    The road surface was also damaged by the fire and while all three lanes have now reopened, Highways England said it was still at the scene.

  5. Free rides on Beryl Bikes over the summerpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 23 July 2020

    People can use Hereford's Beryl Bikes cycle hire scheme for free during the summer holidays.

    From next week until the end of August, the first 30 minutes of all journeys ending in a Beryl Bay will be free.

    It's been a year since the bikes were introduced in the city and in that time cyclists have pedaled more than 130,000 km in 50,000 trips.

    There are now 200 of the green bikes in Hereford.

    Teenage cancer patients have been able to return to a dedicated hospital ward after being moved due to coronavirus.

    Patients on the Teenage Cancer Trust Ward in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, were moved on to other wards for their safety during the Covid-19 pandemic.

    That meant the ward could be turned into a dedicated coronavirus assessment and treatment centre, if needed.

    Young people on the ward said being back was "like coming home".

  7. Bridge damaged by floods set to be repairedpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 23 July 2020

    A bridge in north east Shropshire that was damaged by the winter floods will close for 12 weeks for repairs, starting from Monday.

    Temporary repairs were made to keep Ercall Mill Bridge open after the River Roden burst its banks, but now permanent work is needed.

    The restoration work will cut off the B5062 between Roden and High Ercall until October.

    Two people needed emergency treatment after their motorbike was involved in a crash with a car in Nuneaton yesterday.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said it happened near Bridge Street at 16:45 and the man and woman suffered "serious injuries".

    Car manufacturer Lotus has announced plans to set up a new technology centre to help develop the next generation of sports cars.

    Located on the University of Warwick's Wellesbourne Campus, it will include offices, workshops and laboratories.

    Initially bringing in 130 engineers, the company said it created "capacity for many new jobs".

    They are expected to complement the 500-strong engineering team at its base in Hethel, Norfolk.

    Teams competing in the Bhangra Showdown, held this year in Birmingham, were filmed for months as they tried to perfect their gruelling routines.

    Ajay Palflora, from the University of Birmingham, is seen pushing his team to its limits during training sessions.

    The competition is organised by the Punjabi Society at Imperial College, London, which claims it is the biggest of its kind in the world.

    The vehicle was completely destroyed in the blaze at about 04:15 on the southbound side between J3A and J3. Two lanes remain closed.

    West Bromwich Albion will be back in the Premier League next season after securing promotion last night.

    Despite failing to beat QPR in their final league game of the season, a draw was enough for Slaven Bilic's Baggies to go up in second place after Brentford lost to Barnsley.

    The only disappointment for Albion was that their latest promotion came behind closed doors, with no supporters allowed inside The Hawthorns because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    But, while Albion's players celebrated on the pitch and showered Bilic with champagne, a group of Baggies fans were determined not to be left out.

    Despite warnings from both the club and Sandwell Council to stay away and follow social distancing guidelines, a large gathering of supporters were soon showing their glee as car horns blew and blue smoke gusted outside the Jeff Astle gates.

    Elsewhere in the Championship last night, Birmingham City avoided relegation despite losing 3-1 at home to Derby and Stoke City beat Nottingham Forest 4-1.

    A sports centre and playing fields are being given a makeover ahead of reopening, as part of a £2m investment in a town’s leisure facilities.

    Cheshire East Council says, external Barony Park Sports Complex, Nantwich, is due to reopen for gym and group exercise classes from 1 August and an outdoor gym is also planned.

    Wooden fencing is being installed as the first phase of the works, which also include plans for more trees, wildflower meadows and an outdoor "classroom" to study nature.
