  1. Car crashed with van 'during police pursuit'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    A crash on Pershore Road in Birmingham this morning involved a suspected stolen car being pursued by officers, police say.

    The crash happened at the junction of Pershore Road and Dogpool Lane just before 05:30.

    Following the pursuit, during which objects including bricks were thrown at police vehicles, the car failed to give way and collided with a van before hitting a shop, said West Midlands Police.

    The 15-year-old car driver remains in police custody for questioning after being treated in hospital for minor injuries.

    The driver of the van, 48, suffered head and neck injuries and remains in hospital in a serious condition.

    A 17-year-old passenger from the Audi suffered spinal injuries and is being treated in hospital where his condition is also described as serious.

    Officers are also looking for a third youth who fled the scene.

    New images show what the revamped Perry Barr station will look like ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

    The development is part of the £500m regeneration of Perry Barr currently being carried out by the council, which also includes the construction of the Athletes’ Village.

    The station will feature multiple entrances, a ticket office, toilets, an out-of-hours entrance, lifts and new stairs.

    Further improvements include step-free access, planters, passenger seating and cycle racks.

    The full planning application has now been submitted to Birmingham City Council, with work due to be completed in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

    A witness appeal has been launched after a man was assaulted on a Hereford street.

    He was punched in Eign Gate by a man as he approached the subway passage, officers said.

    The assault happened between 17:30 and 18:00 on Sunday, said West Mercia Police.

    It is asking for any witnesses to come forward.

    Five students at Birmingham City University are self-isolating after one of them tested positive for coronavirus.

    Aston University has also confirmed to BBC Radio WM that it has a small number of staff and students with confirmed cases of Covid-19.

    There are calls for all teaching to be moved online - and some tuition and accommodation costs to be refunded.

    Health minister Helen Whately told BBC Breakfast it "must be really tough" for students having to self-isolate at universities, but the government wanted outbreaks "under control".

    She said universities were "working very hard to achieve that" so students could go "back to combination" of online and face-to-face learning and socially distanced socialising.

    A woman has been charged with murder following a stabbing in a village in Herefordshire.

    Police were called at about 02:00 on Saturday to reports a 69-year-old woman had been stabbed in Cradley.

    Laura van Marle, 40, of no fixed address, has been charged with the murder of Susanna van Marle, police say.

    She is also accused of causing grievous bodily harm to a 73-year-old man during the same incident.

    British number one Dan Evans lost to Japan's Kei Nishikori in the French Open first round.

    Evans has lost on all three appearances in the main draw at Roland Garros after a 1-6 6-1 7-6 (7-3) 1-6 6-4 defeat.

    Evans admitted he could not have been handed much tougher a draw than Nishikori, who is ranked one place below the Briton after injury problems at 35th in the world.

    So it proved. Once the obvious disappointment subsides, Evans will be able to take heart from a gritty display where he continued to hang in and show flashes of his quality.

    The 30-year-old from Birmingham admits clay is not his favourite surface and, with Nishikori not quite in peak condition, it transpired to be an engaging and unpredictable battle between the pair.

    Three people have been taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries after a van and car were involved in a crash in Birmingham earlier.

    Part of the A441 Pershore Road remains closed in both directions after the crash at the junction of St Stevens Road shortly before 05:30, said the ambulance service.

    The car ended up against a building with both vehicles suffering significant damage.

    Two teenagers in the car were taken to hospital, along with the driver of the van - a middle-aged man.

    A hospital trust has become the first in England to have recorded more than 1,000 deaths of patients with Covid-19.

    University Hospitals Birmingham, which incorporates four hospitals and is the biggest trust in England, has reported 1,001 deaths , externalsince the outbreak began.

    It comes as the number of cases in the city reached 153.2 per 100,000 people - in the seven days to 24 September - the highest in the West Midlands.

    Military support is being brought in to help with the coronavirus testing programme in the city.

    More than 1,500 people have signed a petition to save an old Birmingham library building.

    Selly Oak Library was given to the city in 1905, but it closed in 2017.

    Members of the Selly Oak Community Development Trust want the council to hand them control of the building, so they can turn it into a new arts centre.

    Birmingham had twice led during the game, but were pegged back on both occasions by the Seagulls, including a last-minute equaliser from Denise O'Sullivan to send the match into extra time.

    Two people have died after a car hit a tree near Congleton in Cheshire East.

    Police discovered the vehicle on Congleton Road, Marton, at about 03:00 on Sunday.

    The two occupants of the Mini Cooper died at the scene, said the Cheshire force.

    Formal identification has not yet taken place but they are believed to be a 22-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman from the area, the force adds.
