But Gavin Williamson rejected calls to switch all teaching to online.

The latest estimate suggests 49 UK universities have had Covid cases so far this term - up nine since Monday.

Labour accused Mr Williamson of being the "invisible man" who had failed "to get to grips with the situation".

Mr Williamson, the Conservative MP for Staffordshire South told the House of Commons that universities could move to online-only learning before term would usually end - so that students in local Covid outbreaks would have time to isolate and still be able to travel home at Christmas.

First-year student Horoon Irshad from Alum Rock is isolating after being told he could have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

He said students had become "fearful" due to the incidents of coronavirus.

"How are we meant to concentrate on our studies - fulfill the £9,000 university fee and still attain the same quality of education - without feeling that fear?

"I think £9,000 for me to be going in twice every two weeks and then online lectures - whilst I appreciate every universities efforts to deliver those - I think that £9,000 just for me feels like a bank robbery," he added.

In a statement BCU said it has put in place a contact tracing system which is working as planned and it will support all students who have to isolate.

    Quote Message

We have committed to face-to-face teaching and we know from feedback that the majority of students are delighted to be back on campus with access to university facilities, and we recognise what a tough time it has been working and studying from home.
