    A fresh warning of icy conditions across the West Midlands has been issued for this evening and tonight.

    The Met Office has, external put out a yellow alert and said there could be injuries from slips and falls along with travel disruption.

    The warning runs from 18:00 today until 10:00 on Tuesday.

    Some footpaths will be cleared in Birmingham by city council staff today.

    The local authority said , externalit would be working to treat priority paths including clearing snow as well as sending out gritters.

    The number of places having their bin collections cancelled today due to the wintry weather is increasing.

    Sandwell Council said, external pavement and road conditions have forced them to suspend household waste collections and recycling collections have already been suspended due to staff shortages.

    In Walsall, external, Wolverhampton, external and the Staffordshire Moorlands, external, local councils said collections would continue but warned of disruption away from main, treated roads.

    Walsall Council has , externalalso closed both tips in the borough.

    Drivers on the M6 are being urged to slow down in the wintry weather.

    The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) said , externalthere had been four crashes already this morning by 08:41 including this car which lost control at junction 8, near Walsall.

    Several flood warnings have been downgraded in the West Midlands this morning as levels on the River Severn continue to fall.

    Among those being scaled back is the village of Kempsey, which is now just a flood alert.

    The Environment Agency said the flood pumps kept the village dry over the weekend.

    It was not the same story at Beales Corner in Bewdley, where temporary barriers failed.

  8. Covid test sites shut due to icy weatherpublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2021

    Three coronavirus testing centres have been confirmed closed today due to the ongoing wintry conditions in the West Midlands.

    The site at Lichfield FC in Staffordshire closed yesterday in the snow and the county council confirmed it had not reopened.

    Herefordshire Council said , externalthe icy conditions meant the ones on Wilton road car park, Ross on Wye, and Merton Meadow, Hereford, were shut today.

    Five other sites closed yesterday and we are still awaiting confirmation from the councils in Birmingham, Coventry and Telford if they have reopened.

    More bin collections have been suspended today with councils citing the unsafe conditions to work in due to the snow and ice.

    Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said, external alternative arrangements would be put in place and residents who had been due a collection today should keep their bins out.

    North Warwickshire Borough Council said, external areas hit by the conditions today included Coleshill, Water Orton, Wishaw, Curdworth and Middleton.

    It said while some roads appeared clear "they represent a very small percentage of the collections to be undertaken".

    Temperatures in the West Midlands dropped dramatically overnight with some places getting down to -7C.

    A group that helps medical staff get in and out of work in bad weather said it had been in high demand at the weekend.

    West Midlands 4x4 Response is run by a team of volunteer drivers and Simon Croft, from the group, said they have been busy.

    "I have been lucky enough to respond a couple of times over the last couple of weeks, helping out a senior registrar in one instance who got stuck and spent two hours after a 12-hour shift trying to get home," he said.

    Quad bike owners are being warned not to use the snow as an excuse to cause "havoc" in their communities.

    West Midlands Police said, external officers seized multiple bikes on Sunday and warned they would seize and crush other vehicles causing disruption.

    A group that gives surplus food to community groups has had to cancel events today due to the snow.

    Shrewsbury Food Hub said its food share efforts at Christ Church and Belle Vue would be closed today to keep its volunteer drivers safe.

    All bin collections in Solihull have been suspended today because of the bad weather.

    The council said, external it would not reschedule the collections and crews would instead pick up "all waste presented" on Monday 1 February.

    About 20 flood warnings are still in force in the region, along the route of the River Severn -almost half of those across England.

    The worst of the flooding has moved downstream over the weekend and river levels are expected to fall further.

    A flood warning in Ironbridge was removed yesterday evening, the Environment Agency said, although flood barriers remain up.

    Tweeting over the weekend, Dave Throup from the Environment agency said levels in Bewdley were almost the same as the horrendous floods of last winter.
