A church pastor from Wolverhampton has accused the authorities of being "lazy" when it comes to targeting misinformation about coronavirus and the vaccine among black and minority ethnic communities.
"The biggest failure of the authorities – and I say this in the broadest sense – they have been quite lazy in my view, they assume that one size fits all," Derrick Campbell said.
The pastor said he has heard a number of theories from people about the vaccine, which while they may seem "ludicrous" are believable because they appear to come from credible sources.
"We’ve had overseas evangelists targeting the church communities, we’ve had people claiming to be doctors who have come out with some of this misinformation," he said.
He said authorities need to do more than simply removing misinformation from social media accounts and extend the work to "re-educating" people who have been influenced by it.
"We need to have more hand holding, a proper process of dealing with those issues.... as ludicrous as they may sound, people believe it and we need to be able to address that."
