    A man suffered multiple injuries in a stabbing in Coventry city centre on Thursday.

    The 29-year-old was attacked near a kebab shop on New Union Street at about 19:00, police said.

    He ran into a nearby shop for help, according to the West Midlands force.

    He was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries, added the ambulance service.

    An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding, assault and criminal damage.

    Birmingham street traders have been granted a judicial review of a council policy requiring them to sell only “innovative products”.

    Birmingham Street Traders Association says the new policy – which includes a non-refundable £724 application fee – will mean long-running city businesses will close.

    The policy includes a requirement for traders to sell items not available on the high street, but traders say the council has so far not given any examples of what these include.

    The plan is set to be challenged at a High Court hearing due to take place after 26 March.

    A man found guilty of murdering his five-month-old baby daughter is set to be sentenced later.

    Summer Peace died in 2017 after suffering a catastrophic brain injury along with fractured ribs and bleeding.

    Philip Peace, 43, denied the charge but was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.

    During the trial the jury heard evidence that Summer had died of injuries consistent with her having been shaken and then thrown against a semi-hard surface such as a sofa.

    Telford has been creeping up the Covid infections league table and the local authority believes it's because the virus is being transmitted at work.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said eight out of 10 new infections were in people of working age and asked those who weren't able to work from home to get themselves tested twice a week.

    The number of new cases is falling, but only by 2%, which means Telford is now among the 40 local authorities where infection numbers are highest.

    A beer festival set to take place in Hereford in July has been cancelled, even though it would have been held after the forecast end to lockdown restrictions.

    Mark Haslam from Beer on the Wye said that because the event used a small site and expected large crowds, it would be "reckless" to go ahead.

    The Government's road map out of lockdown could see restrictions on large gatherings lifted towards the end of June, if the vaccine roll-out continues to be a success, infection rates don't cause a surge in hospital admissions, and there are no dangerous changes in the virus.

    But Mr Haslam said: "We were hoping that with the roll-out of the vaccine circumstances might have moved quicker in our favour."

  12. Extra measures taken at HMP Birmingham after Covid outbreakpublished at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2021

    Precautionary measures are being taken at HMP Birmingham after a Covid outbreak.

    The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) says its priority is to limit the spread of the virus and has taken the steps "in line with public health guidance, and will continue to closely monitor the situation".

    It is not clear how many cases there are or the extent to which there is a rise on previous numbers.

    Figures from the MoJ show , externalthere were 846 coronavirus cases in prisons in England and Wales in the week ending 15 February, compared to 1,005 the week before.

    Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed today that prisoners won't be prioritised for vaccines as the next phase of the roll-out is revealed in the coming days by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

    A spokesman for Mr Johnson said: "They are vaccinated at the same time as the general public in line with the JCVI prioritisation groups, no quicker than that."

    Herefordshire Council is forecasting a £13m overspend in the current financial year - with more than £10m due to the authority's response to the coronavirus.

    However, finance officers say the situation has improved since the first and second quarters of the year.

    The government has awarded grants to local authorities to manage their Covid-19 responses, which are expected to cover about 70% of the pressure, although the council says discussions with government are ongoing.

    The council´s capital budget for 2020/21 has been revised to £92.136m which includes a £51.712m underspend from 2019/20.

    Officers in Staffordshire are warning people to be wary of online fraudsters, external claiming to be selling puppies and dogs after a rise in incidents over the past week.

    Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are two places involved in a number of the reports, Staffordshire Police said.

    A spokesman for the force said: "Please be vigilant when browsing animals for sale and do everything you can to make sure the adverts are from genuine sellers before parting with any money.

    "If anything arouses suspicion at all or doesn’t seem to quite add up, please, please don’t send them any money."

    A family in Coventry say they will now start to speak to suppliers after winning an appeal to have their mother's gravestone marked with an Irish inscription.

    It follows a battle of almost three years to have Margaret Keane's final resting place marked with Irish words.

    The Church of England initially rejected her family's bid to have the message in Irish, insisting on an English translation.

    Margaret's daughter Bernadette Martin said they were "delighted" to win their appeal in London on Wednesday.

    A boy has been stabbed on a Walsall street.

    The 16-year-old was approached by two males on Caldmore Road just after 15:30 on Wednesday before being stabbed in the stomach, police said.

    The pair then fled.

    The boy remains in hospital in a stable condition, according to the West Midlands force, which is appealing for information in connection with the attack.
