  4. Fuel shortages: 'A good job I only want milk'published at 14:20 British Summer Time 27 September 2021

    Kathryn Stanczyszyn
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio WM

I went out this morning to try and find a petrol station with any fuel for BBC Radio WM and visited about half a dozen that had all run dry.

    Sign saying out of fuel

From the Esso garage on the A38, Catshill, to the BP garage in Longbridge, they all told me they were expecting deliveries but were out of fuel this morning.

I spoke to some of the drivers turning up hoping to find a flowing pump and one told me he was hunting for fuel for himself, his wife and daughter so they could all get to work.

With none at the garage where I met him he was going "back on the road, I have given myself a margin so I do not get stuck out here".

Another woman told me that, over the weekend, her local forecourt had about 20 cars queuing and today was out of fuel. "It's ridiculous, it is a good job I only want milk this time," she said.

With drivers panicking over long queues at forecourts, Greg Burgher from GDB Recovery, Stafford, said his company's weekend had been "absolute madness".

He said: "We have had people breaking down on the way to the pumps [and others] have obviously broken down [at] the pumps when they have panicked and put the wrong fuel in the car.

"People have been going from forecourt to forecourt on the hunt for fuel, and it is just absolutely bonkers."

The motorway is closed northbound from junction 14 for Stafford North and junction 15 for Stoke-on-Trent.

The lorry is across all lanes by the entry slip road from Stafford Services with traffic unable to enter.

Traffic that was stuck in the services can now exit, travel service Inrix is reporting.

There is severe congestion on the A449 through Stafford as drivers seek alternative routes.

    BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester

Extra fuel deliveries have been organised by an independent petrol station to cope with increased demand.

"Usually we have three deliveries a week [but] we have been doing two deliveries a day since Friday," Ms Tooth said.

However she admitted the weekend had been "pretty chaotic" with busy trade, adding the site opened late on Saturday for front-line workers and NHS staff.

Geoff Grewcock runs Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary and says there have been five calls over the weekend staff could not attend.

"We cannot go out and pick [animals] up so they are actually dying so it is a bad state of affairs. I wish people would stop panic buying [petrol]," he said.

In separate cases, he added, four deer and a badger were hit by cars, but charity staff were unable to find fuel for their two rescue vehicles.

He added staff could not afford to wait in queues because they had been so busy.

Rupen Hindocha, owner of Pingles Service Station, says the premises are getting supplies but petrol runs out within hours due to a "huge amount of panic buying".

He said: "As soon as we see a tanker on the forecourt, [customers] just line up down the road waiting for us to open, and as soon as we open, within a few hours, the majority [of petrol] is gone."

As well as rationing drivers, he said he had put on more staff to cope with the demand.

  14. 'I can't limit people's petrol, I can't police it'published at 11:10 British Summer Time 27 September 2021

A petrol station that had none to sell before the weekend said sales had been "manic" since fuel returned to its pumps.

Graham Wylde, who runs Shawbury Service Station in Shropshire, said Friday was the first time in 48 years he had run dry.

After taking a delivery on Saturday afternoon, he said sales skyrocketed, with fresh queues from the moment the site opened at 07:45 BST on Monday.

Mr Wylde said he had also seen a lot of new customers as people looked for viable sellers.

The largest purchase over the weekend, he said, was £110.

"It is extremely busy here this morning, absolutely manic busy.

"I haven’t limited people, it would be too difficult to police it."

He added: "It is too busy. It is a little bit unfair on me and the staff because it is hard work."

  15. Petrol sales 'calm down slightly' after 'mad rush'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 27 September 2021

A Shropshire petrol station says sales have "calmed down slightly" after selling out of fuel.

Jonathan Corbo, from Shell in Much Wenlock, said the premises had seen queues of up to 200m (656 ft) over the weekend.

After selling out of fuel due to "manic" sales on Friday, he said, he was able to get a delivery on Saturday, although another expected the day after was delayed until 05:00 BST on Monday.

Normally, Mr Corbo said, they made orders every three days, but had increased it to every other day because of the increased sales and potentially delayed deliveries.

"We only ran out Friday because of the sudden mad rush. If we had pre-empted that many people, it would have been fine, and we have been fine since," he said.

"It has been relatively manic. We shut half the court to ease the flow of cars...and we have [a spend] limit of £40, just to try and get a bunch out.

"I am trying to contact nurses to say we have fuel, a lot of carers and a lot of nurses need fuel....but it is not like Friday, it is calming down slowly."
