"There needs to be some knocking heads together", Mr Starmer said on a visit to Newcastle-under-Lyme when asked about the ongoing situation at Walleys Quarry.

A ruling by the High Court in September said the Environment Agency had to do more to cut levels of hydrogen sulphide from the site.

The agency promised more wells, better modelling and a review of the amount of capping on the site among its targets.

Mr Starmer said he felt there should be more urgency from authorities in curbing the smells and gases.

"Whatever the powers are, they need to be exercised straightaway. If there need to be extra powers then let us have that discussion," he said.

Brighton have turned into the draw specialists, with five of them in their past six league games.

At the start of the season the Seagulls were making the most of their chances and winning games, but they have stopped taking those opportunities now and are not beating teams.

In that regard, they have regressed a bit to the way they were last season, when they did not score enough goals.

That's one of the reasons I can see Villa winning this one 2-0.

Steven Gerrard will have made a difference in training already and I think we will see a response from their players here.
