Read MoreAn ambulance caught fire while on its way to a 999 call in Birmingham last night.
West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) said the crew noticed it smoking while they were driving with flashing blue lights and sirens, and were able to get out without being hurt.
Another ambulance was sent to deal with their call instead.
While the vehicle suffered "significant external damage", the ambulance service said it didn't appear to have suffered internal damage and the equipment inside could be used again.
WMAS said the fire was unusual though, because none of its vehicles were over five years old and it wanted to discover the cause.

Nicola Richards, the Conservative MP for West Bromwich East, has defended the use of stop and search powers by the police.
She has criticised the region's Labour Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, for suggesting it could damage support for the police in black and Asian communities.
Ms Richards said complaints about stop and search in the area had been low and she added: "It shows proportionality is there, that police feel confident in using these powers, the body camera footage provides faith in the police and gives our communities protection."
A major facelift is to get under way to improve the street scene around the refurbished Civic Halls in Wolverhampton.
"Full works" would start next week to transform the scene around the halls ready for its reopening in the autumn next year under venue operator and concert promoter AEG Presents, the council said.
The carriageway on North Street would be moved closer to the Civic Centre "creating a wider, safer area in front of the halls for gathering crowds", the authority added.
The changes will also include a new designated cycle route through North Street. Mitre Fold will become a pedestrian zone, with access for deliveries only.
Initial works will see the construction of a new carriageway link between Paternoster Row and North Street to help traffic flow around the halls.
It's going to be a little warmer today, with temperatures up to 15C (59F) and we are forecast light cloud and a gentle breeze.
