  6. Be alert: possible flooding over the weekend

    The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts for the Somerset and South Gloucestershire coast.

    It's feared that, at high tide times, and when the snow begins to melt over coming days, the west could be facing sodden conditions in some areas.

    They include:

    • On the Somerset coast "strong onshore winds will cause tide levels to rise further during this evening's tide tonight (Friday 2 March)." There is a risk of over-topping of coastal defences.
    • At Dunster to Brean strong onshore winds "will cause tide levels to rise further. Over-topping and onshore flooding may occur as a result of high water levels combined with high energy waves."
    • Localised floods possible around Sharpness on Saturday and Sunday.
    • Tides of up to 14 meters at the Wye Estuary and Avonmouth, again on Saturday and Sunday.
    • For the tidal River Avon at Bristol, Pill and Shirehampton: "Tides are rising and are due to peak on Sunday. They will reach flood alert criteria over the weekend. The time and date of the first forecast high water is 08:15 on Saturday 03/03/2018."

  13. At least 10 lives saved by volunteers

    At least 10 lives were saved by volunteers deployed to help people stranded overnight in the snow, according to Duncan Massey of Avon & Somerset Search and Rescue.

    Mr Massey was asked to assume the role of silver commander at police HQ to co-ordinate volunteers across the force area.

    He said: "We estimate the volunteers alone saved 10 or more lives by direct intervention.

    "Exmoor Search & Rescue had a call-out to two missing hill walkers who were found and removed to safety.

    "I was travelling home in the early hours and the call call came out that a car was stuck with four people in it and snowed in.

    "I managed to fiddle my way through and met a farmer and we found the car, buried under eight feet of snow with four people in it."

  18. Travel: Road closures update

    There are still multiple travel problems - too many to list - but here are some of the issues on our roads this evening:

    • There's one lane closed on the M48 Severn Bridge in both directions because of high winds
    • The A303 is still closed in both directions at Ilminster where work continues to recover 100 cars stranded in the snow

    All these roads are also closed because of the snow:

    • The A338 and the A342 at Ludgershall, the A342 at Devizes, the A345 between Old Sarum and the A303, the A360 High Street at Tilshead, the A346 at Chiseldon, the A371 at Prestleigh, the A40 at Shipton, the A429 at Stow on the Wold, the A245 at Bishop's Cleeve, the A44 at Bourton on the Hill, the A46 at Tormarton, the A4136 at Nailbridge and the A4361 at Avebury

    Police advice remains not to travel.
