    A mother has called on the government to make the chickenpox vaccination free for all after her toddler had what she claims was the "worst ever case".

    Jasper Allen spent five days in hospital after severe chickenpox sores - which covered his entire body - became severely infected. The jab is currently only available to certain children on medical grounds.

    His mum Sarah, 36 and from St Neots, said: "Everyone's reactions in the hospital were just complete shock over how severe it was - the doctors all wanted to come and see this worst ever case of chickenpox, external."

    Mrs Allen said doctors did not know why Jasper's chickenpox was so severe but he is currently undergoing heart scans to make sure there are no lasting effects.

    A feline celebrity from Ely has been banned from his favourite spot at a local supermarket after he scratched a child.

    Garfield the cat, better known as "Mr Sainsbury's", is a frequent visitor to the local supermarket and liked to lounge on the sofa at the Virgin Travel shop in the store.

    But he's now been banned from that part of the store following a complaint.

    The cat is frequently found lounging on customer's cars or being fed titbits at the store's main doors, external. His owners have tried to curb his wanderings before, without much success.

    Many messages of support have been posted on the cat's own Facebook fan site, external, including a message which reads: "Complaining is petty and ridiculous, he's hardly a lion is he!!!"

    The organisers of the annual Lodestar music festival say they have had to cancel this year's event owing to poor ticket sales.

    Doug Durrant, who has organised the event since 2007, said in a statement this afternoon: "Over the past seven years I have always offered far more at Lodestar than ticket sales covered to build the event and hope each year people would return. And always offered the best music before most knew of the artist."

    The statement, issued on the Lodestar website, external, went on to say that "despite efforts to get local company support, none was forthcoming".  

    Those who have bought tickets already will receive a refund.

  7. Travel: A day of crashes and chaos on Cambridgeshire's roadspublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    This afternoon we've been reporting on news of a fatal crash on the A10 between Stretham and Chittering. Two cars were involved in the collision at about 13:45 and the road will remain closed this afternoon.

    There have been other serious incidents in Cambridgeshire today. The A1101 was closed at Leverington when a minibus left the road before 06:00. Eight passengers were injured, one critically.

    Late this morning, the B660 was closed between the B1043 and Holme due to a serious collision, where three people were taken to hospital.

    Meanwhile, there's better news from the A14, where an earlier accident at Spittals Interchange has been cleared.

  8. Travel: A1101 collision on 'dangerous' stretch of roadpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    We reported earlier that eight people were hurt - one critically - when a minibus came off the A1101 at Leverington.

    It's thought they were agricultural workers on their way to work.

    Sgt Chris Clare from the Roads Policing Unit told us that particular stretch of road has recently had a lot of money spent on it and had new signage, but was still considered to be one of the most dangerous sections of road in Cambridgeshire.

    Cambridgeshire Police are hoping to talk to the driver of a car, spotted travelling towards Wisbech, who may have witnessed what happened. They stress the driver was not involved with the incident.

    A local resident, Steve Spriggs, records traffic on the same stretch of road. He told us there are frequent accidents on the A1101 and police have taken his footage as part of their investigation.

    It's been confirmed that one person has died following a crash on the A10 between Chittering and the A1123 Stretham roundabout.

  13. Rikki Neave: Suspect detained in Lisbonpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    A 35-year-old man from Peterborough originally arrested in connection with the historical murder of six-year-old Rikki Neave (pictured) in 1994 has been arrested again in Portugal.

    The man was detained by local officers in Lisbon at lunchtime, Cambridgeshire Police said.

    He will remain in custody in Portugal while extradition proceedings begin. He was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of breaching his licence.

    Officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit are expected to travel out to Portugal in the coming days.

    It was reported last month the suspect had left the country while on bail, with officers trying to trace his location.

    More than 40 farmers gathered in Hunworth near Holt this morning to discuss the impact of Brexit on agriculture.

    It was the first of a number of meetings organised by the National Farmers Union, external to try to find out what farmers feel are the most important things that need to be in the forthcoming negotiations with Brussels and the UK government.

    Robert Sheasby, regional director of the NFU, says it's important to "get it right as good trade deals, access to migrant labour and a continuation of subsidies are top of farmers' concerns."

  19. Cambridge Folk Festival disability row: 'Comments were deeply derogatory'published at 11:29 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    Yesterday we reported on claims former Paralympic champion Fran Williamson and her husband Dr Chris Whitaker were referred to by a member of staff at the Cambridge Folk Festival as "window lickers".

    Dr Whitaker has been speaking about the alleged incident on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

    He said: "It was deeply derogatory and the implication is that we shouldn't be out without supervision."

    He added: "We have been in constant dialogue with the organisers but there are still some unanswered questions. It's quite devastating. We try to live our lives in a positive way, to be seen for what we can do."

    Cambridge Live, external, the organisers of the festival, said yesterday it could not find any evidence the slur was used following consultation with staff, but Dr Whitaker insisted they had correctly heard the "misguided and moronic" comment.

  20. A1101 crash: Latest from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescuepublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 2 August 2016

    We have been reporting this morning about a serious accident involving a VW minibus at Leverington on the A1101.

    Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue has updated us. It tells us that two crews from Wisbech and a rescue vehicle from King's Lynn attended the scene.

    There were eight casualties involved. Three managed to get out of the vehicle before crews arrived and firefighters released a further five who were trapped.

    Incident commander Ady Slack said: "Crews were faced with a difficult situation with five casualties trapped in the vehicle. They worked closely with colleagues from the ambulance service to release the casualties safely."
