    A man has been airlifted to hospital following a collision between a train and a car at Nairns Level Crossing, near Stretham, just after 14:30. The man is believed to have been the driver of the car, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

    Here's the latest regarding rail travel on the line between Cambridge and Ely.

    Abellio Greater Anglia, CrossCountry and Great Northern services all use the line. It's believed that a Great Northern service was involved in the crash.

    We've been reporting that a man has been badly injured after a train struck a vehicle on the rail line between Cambridge and Ely, on the A1123 between Stretham and Wicken.

    A man in his 40s has been airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital. He was earlier treated at the scene for a serious head injury.

    Abellio Greater Anglia, CrossCountry and Great Northern services all use the line, though it's not clear which service was involved.

    The Huntingdon Carnival, external will get under way tomorrow, 14 years after it was last held. The event ceased because there weren't enough volunteers to organise and staff the event.

    This Saturday there will be a parade, including Thomas the Tank Engine, a pipe band, Noddy, and a Brazilian theme.

    Isabella du Toit will be the carnival queen and she says she can't wait to wear her gown and crown, telling us: "I'm excited and looking forward to it".

    Her mother says she "will do us proud".

  7. Funeral of dancing teacher and Len Goodman's 'mentor' takes placepublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    The funeral of popular dance teacher Dereck Brown has been taking place today at Peterborough Cathedral. He taught generations of people how to dance at his Lincoln Road studio - including Strictly Come Dancing head judge Len Goodman and dancer Anton du Beke.

    His friend, Alan Dexter, who he had known for almost 60 years, told us: "He tried in vain to get me dancing. He was a great man popular in the community, so sadly missed."  

    Len Goodman, speaking recently about the news of his death, external, said: "They are so few and far between, these really great dancing teachers. He was one of the gentlest, kindest and most professional people I ever met.

    "It was his principles and the way he taught that I've used for nearly 50 years. He was truly my mentor."

  8. Hidden shoe placed in wall to deter 'evil spirits'published at 13:56 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    A 300 year-old shoe found in a wall at St John's College, Cambridge, external was probably placed there to keep "evil spirits" at bay according to historians. It was uncovered by maintenance staff in the college's Tudor-era Second Court. 

    The building was originally the residence of the Master of St John's College, built between 1598 and 1602, but it is thought that the shoe was put behind the panels during changes to its interior, between the end of the 17th Century, and midway through the 18th.

    Shoes are sometimes found near windows, doors and fireplaces of old buildings as they were thought to protect the inhabitant and prevent malicious forces from entering.

    We've been bringing you news throughout the day that reports of illegal tattooists are on the rise in Peterborough. The city council is pursuing two cases after the prosecution of a man last year for running an illegal tattoo parlour, external

    A registered tattooist from Ely - who says he's being asked to fix "two or three" bodged jobs per week - told us that he often has "stand-up" rows with parents who don't understand the law.

    Steve Tucker from Almost Angels told us: "They are convinced that if they've given their 16-year-old permission, then it's fine. It's not. The law is 18 - it's always been 18". 

    The Local Government Association is urging online retailers to provide warnings to children, external on the dangers of using DIY tattoo kits – which can be bought for less than £25 – and for tougher sentences for illegal tattooists.

    Workers from Virgin Trains East Coast have announced they are staging three 24-hour strikes

    It means services through Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire are likely to be affected. 

    Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will walk out from 03:00 on the 19 and 26 August and on Bank Holiday Monday.

    They will also hold an overtime ban for 48 hours from August 27. 

    The RMT says almost 200 jobs are threatened on the East Coast line with the removal of a safety regime that currently ensures a guard on every train.

  12. Council cracks down on 'scratcher' tattooistspublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

    We've been reporting today that unlicensed tattooists - also known as "scratchers"- are operating in makeshift, unsterilised home "studios", using cheap equipment bought online. 

    One was jailed for 16 weeks after a clampdown by Peterborough City Council , externallast year. The man did not have adequate infection procedures in place, putting his clients at risk of infection.

    Samantha Olive, principal environmental health officer, said the council had seen a rise in people contacting it about home tattooists, but that it needed as much information as possible to proceed with a prosecution. It is currently pursuing two other cases.

    She said: "We ran an amnesty asking those who were operating but not registered to come forward so we could get them up and running legally, and we had two people come forward."

    She also told us that the council had a "good working relationship" with licensed tattooists in the city, external. "They welcome the work we've done. They'll often pass on information if they are aware of unregistered tattooists," she said.

    Police say four legally-held firearms have been stolen during a burglary in Stibbington, near Peterborough.

    They were called to a property in Church Lane just before 18:00 yesterday. The weapons were taken from a secure cabinet - along with jewellery - some time between 07:00 and 15:45 yesterday.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or call Crimestoppers.

    We've been reporting this morning that Cambridgeshire Police have "dealt with" three alleged potato thieves in Wimblington, near Chatteris.

    Steve Edgeley, a farmer from Chatteris, says he has often caught people in his fields, telling us: "They aren't bothered when I approach them. They just help themselves. It's impossible to police".

    He added: "This isn't a one-off. I've confronted people I've spotted in other farmers' fields who claimed they have permission to pick a few, but they clearly they haven't."

    Mr Edgeley also said that there was a danger to the public from recently-treated crops. "We spray those potatoes weekly with pesticides and fungicides which can sit in the canopy of the vegetation and can cause skin irritation."

    He said he was also aware of thefts of other crops, such as onions, carrots, and parsnips.

    Earlier, we reported that a local tattooist says he is fixing "two or three" bodged tattoos each week - carried out by unlicensed home tattooists.

    Gerald Vernon-Jackson, from the Local Government Association, says it has seen more people operating from garden sheds, or from their homes, external using kits bought online.

    He told us that licensed tattooists were, in general, very responsible but doesn't think the public are aware of the rules or risks around those who operate from home.  

    He said: "You have to be licensed to make sure you're doing it in a safe way, that the council has been to see that you are operating in a safe environment, otherwise you're operating illegally."

    "There's a real risk of people picking up HIV, hepatitis from people who aren't doing it in a safe and clean way."

    A tattooist from Ely says he's being asked to fix "two or three" bodged jobs per week, by people who've had tattoos done at home by untrained tattooists or on holiday - and he's blaming the rise on on reality TV.

    Steve Tucker from Angel Tattoos, external in Ely says that tattooing "looks easy on TV, but there's a reason it looks easy, and it's because we know what we are doing".

    Mr Tucker also told us that hygiene standards could often be very poor at home, whereas his licensing conditions meant he had to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene at his shop.

    He said: "Often the ink and needles are also substandard, and we have people coming in with all sorts of problems."
