1. Veterans left 'gobsmacked' over Grays' war memorial urinationpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

Yesterday we told you that a woman had been convicted of urinating on a war memorial in Grays.

Now two veterans say they were so disgusted by when they heard about the offence, they travelled from Peterborough to Basildon Magistrates' Court for the trial.

"A lot of people were flabbergasted and gobsmacked," said ex-serviceman Stan Kay (pictured right).

"I was speechless initially, but that didn't last long and it got very vocal on our social media sites very quickly."

Kelly Martin, 42, of no fixed address, is being sentenced later this month after being convicted of outraging public decency, common assault and using abusive language against a paramedic.

  2. Freedom of Peterborough City: How it's decidedpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

Silver medallists Louis Smith and Nick Dempsey could be given the Freedom of the City of Peterborough, according to David Sanders, the city's mayor, external.

But it takes months to be approved. First the mayor suggests their names to the chairman of the honours panel Peter Hiller, who puts it to the panel committee members. If they agree it's a good idea, they'll then put the suggestion to a full city council meeting for approval.

Long before then - in the next few weeks in fact - the council hopes to host a celebration for the Olympians in the city.

But alas no, the Freedom of the City won't allow either man to drive sheep through the streets or graze them at Ferry Meadows or dodge parking tickets - and I call that a shame!

The mayor of Peterborough, David Sanders, has suggested Rio silver medallists Louis Smith and NIck Dempsey should be given the Freedom of the City.

Gymnast Smith has the strongest city links, growing up in Eye and still living locally - while windsurfer Dempsey went to Orton Longueville School (now Nene Park Academy, external) but has lived on the south coast for many years.

But how easy is it to receive the honour? It's quite a long old process - I'll explain more in my next post.

Let's not forget our local high jump hero Robbie Grabarz, who fractionally missed out on a medal last night.

He cleared the bronze medal winning height of 2.33m, but an earlier failure on his first attempt at 2.25m meant he finished joint fourth.

As Giles Scott crossed the finish line in the Finn class at Rio 2016, two people watching from back home were his parents Ros and John Scott.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire caught up with them at Grafham Water, the place where Scott first learned to sail at the age of seven.

"From small beginnings, great things so they say," said mum Ros. "It's been a long time coming, but we're really happy that it's got to this."

This is where Giles really first went out on his own. As a seven-year-old he sailed across [the water] with a group of kids under supervision, and he was one of only two, who he was much younger than, who were allowed to sail themselves back because they felt he was so confident."

  20. Insulation firm IKO takes health and safety 'extremely seriously'published at 17:36 British Summer Time 16 August 2016

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

Earlier we brought you news of a planning application put forward by insulation firm IKO to store hazardous chemicals underground at a new factory on Alconbury Weald.

We've since spoken to IKO, which told us it "understands anyone's natural concern over the storage of chemicals" and it "takes health and safety extremely seriously"

"Although Pentane is a flammable substance, it is less volatile than petrol and will be stored in lower amounts than the fuel at a typical petrol station," a spokesman said.

He added the chemical would be stored in "double-skinned tanks" underground.

In addition, IKO said the proposed factory "will create up to 140 local jobs", adding the other factories the company owns has "excellent relationships within the local communities".
