    Weather forecast

    After a very wet day, it'll be mostly dry with a few clear spells tonight. Cloud is also forecast, with some patchy rain in the far east. It will be breezy, but a fresher night for sleeping, with temperatures falling to 12C (54F).

    Saturday will be rather cloudy in many places with some patchy light rain or drizzle. The brisk north-westerly winds will ease through the day, with temperatures reaching highs of 18C (66F).

  3. Travel latest: Rail disruption into the eveningpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    It's been one of those days for rail users in Cambridgeshire, with lightning strikes disrupting services earlier via Broxbourne, and a points failure at Stansted Mountfitchet.

    There are delays and cancellations to services between Cambridge and Norwich, which are set to continue into the evening.

    It's not been the best of afternoons on Cambridgeshire's roads. We're just getting news in of delays on the A428, in both directions, from the A1198 at Caxton Gibbet.

    Other roads experiencing delays:

    • A1(M) between junctions 15 and 16
    • A1 at St Neots
    • M11 northbound onto the A14
    • A14 spur road approaching Spittals

    This is the crash we've been telling you about, where it appears a small digger has tipped off a trailer onto the central reservation of the A1(M).

    Here's the latest picture of tailbacks on the A1(M) this afternoon.

    A vehicle, believed to be a digger, has fallen from a trailer and landed across the central reservation, between J15 (B1043) and J16 (A15 Norman Cross).

  9. Travel latest: Accident on A1(M); M11 and A14 delayspublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    We're getting reports of an incident on the A1(M) involving a vehicle which has fallen from a lorry.

    It's affecting traffic on both north and southbound carriageways after J16.

    Here's a view of the scene. More as we get it.

    Meanwhile, the M11 is slow northbound onto the A14, from J10 at Duxford, and the westbound A14 is slow from the Milton interchange at the A10, towards the Girton interchange.

  10. Lisa Duffy statement: 'I came a very strong second'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    It's just been announced Diane James has won the contest to replace Nigel Farage as the party's leader.

    She beat Ramsey councillor Lisa Duffy into second place by nearly 4,000 votes. 

    In the last few minutes, Ms Duffy said: "I'm very pleased with the result I got. I came a very strong second, and I wish Diane all the best."

    Her statement continued: "I still have a strong role to play in the party, and in UKIP.

    "I'm proud to be able to stand up and represent the party's grassroots, and I look forward to a united future for the party.

    "As a united party, we will take on the government to force them to deliver Brexit.

    "I'd like to thank everyone who's supported me."

    Lisa Duffy will be joining Gerald Main live on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire from the UKIP conference just after 17:00.

    UKIP deputy chairman Diane James has won the contest to replace Nigel Farage as the party's leader.

    As her victory was announced, she said: "We did it, ladies and gentlemen... and I have just done it and I'm so pleased."

    She added she was "deeply honoured" to succeed Mr Farage.

    Ms James beat Ramsey councillor Lisa Duffy into second place by nearly 4,000 votes. 

    Bill Etheridge came third, Phillip Broughton fourth and Liz Jones fifth. 

  12. Travel latest: Severe delays on the M11 and A14published at 13:37 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    There are reports of flooding effecting traffic on the westbound A14 between Junctions 27 and 26, Fenstanton and St Ives. HIgh

    There are also delays on the southbound M11, from J12 (Barton and the A603) and J11 (A10), owing to a broken down car.

    Heavy rainfall is forecast for Cambridgeshire, for most of the day. It's expected to clear by late afternoon. This is the extent of the rainfall at 13:00.

    Capability Brown, the renowned landscape designer, created some of the most magnificent landscapes in England, including the gardens at Madingley Hall in Cambridge. He bought the Manor House in Fenstanton in 1767.

    Despite working for some of the most influential people in the eighteenth century, he never got round to completing his own gardens at the Manor House in Fenstanton - the only property he ever owned.

  14. Housing benefits guaranteed for those in supported housingpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    The government has pledged to extend protection of housing benefits to those who require supported housing.

    It follows a report, external from Cambridgeshire County Council, which raised concerns about what would happen if those in sheltered accommodation were no longer able to afford their rent. 

    It said uncertainty over housing benefits was stalling new accommodation, could leave a financial hole of millions and lumber the council with more people to take care of.

    Deborah Latham, head of community support services at CHS Group, external, a charitable housing association which operates Cambridgeshire, said  40% of supported housing services would have had to close, had this funding not been made available. 

    She said: "We've won the argument this far, we're hoping it continues into the future. We are reliant on the council at a time of massive cuts so we hope they continue to come up with the money.

    "It is excellent news for people who live in supported housing."

    We're braced for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to sweep through Cambridgeshire from late morning and the Met Office has issued a weather warning for the county.

    Lightning strikes continue to cause problems for rail passengers today, between Cambridge and Norwich, and on routes via Stansted and Broxbourne. Although operator Abellio says services are starting to get back to normal on the London Liverpool Street line.

  17. Greater Anglia update their information on Brandon lightning damagepublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Greater Anglia have updated their information, external about the problems caused by lightning damage at Brandon:

    "Customers are advised to travel on Great Northern train services between Cambridge and Ely where you are advised to change for a rail replacement bus service between Ely and Thetford and a train shuttle service between Thetford and Norwich in both directions.

    "Customers at Norwich may travel on Abellio Greater Anglia services to Ipswich and change at Ipswich for Ely."

    Traffic on the M11 southbound is slow between J12 for the A603 and J11 for the A10.

    A broken down car is blocking a lane.

    Meanwhile, there are delays heading northbound onto the A14.

  19. Weather outlook: Thunder and heavy showers expected to persistpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    It's been very unsettled across the East, resulting in thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning strikes.

    There have been several incidents affecting rail services across Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire as a result of lightning and there are major delays on services via Watford following a landslip.

    Here's the extent of the heavy rainfall at 10:00.

    The thundery conditions are expected to persist today.

    This morning - heavy showers, possibly thundery, are expected to clear eastwards during the afternoon with sunny spells developing. Temperatures will reach 15C (59F).

    Tonight, it's expected to be cloudy with rain persisting, but gradually easing through the night. It will also be rather breezy and will feel less humid than recently. Overnight temperatures will fall to 13C (55F).
