We've been reporting that a Norfolk lorry driver who caused a crash in which an off-duty police officer was killed in Cambridgeshire has been sentenced to six years in prison.

The Peterborough Crown Court trial heard Sharon Garrett's Renault Clio was forced into a field during the crash, which saw Danny Warby veer across the road several times.

He denied he'd been using his phone before the crash, but was found to have opened a text message moments earlier.

Passing sentence today in Huntingdon, the crown court heard he had numerous previous convictions for using a phone while driving, speeding, driving without a seatbelt and no insurance.

In 2015, he was banned for a year for drink driving.

Addressing Warby, Judge Stuart Bridge said he had not learned anything from his previous convictions, adding: "Your driving in general was reckless and cavalier and on this day it was deplorable.

"Mrs Garrett and her family have paid the ultimate price."

As we've heard, a lorry driver who crashed into an off-duty police officer's car, killing her, has been jailed for six years.

During a nine-day trial, Peterborough Crown Court heard Danny Warby, from Norfolk, had opened a text message one minute and six seconds before the accident.

He was also speeding at 53mph (85km/h) on a stretch of single carriageway restricted to 40mph (64km/h) for lorries at the time of the collision, the prosecution said.

Mother-of-two Mrs Garrett, who was married to a fellow police officer, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Warby had denied causing her death by dangerous driving but was convicted by a jury last month.

Sentencing at Huntingdon Crown Court, he was also disqualified from driving for 10 years. He was ordered to take an extended driving test to regain his licence at the end of his sentence.

It's been revealed that Jonnie Peacock was running with a bit of extra weight on Saturday, when he won 100m gold in the T44 race at Rio.

His mum Linda Green told us he taped the St Christopher medal he was given by her on his 18th birthday to his blade, along with his grandfather's military badge.

Linda says: "He did that so that we could, literally, be with him every step of the way."

They fell off mid-race, but were thankfully found afterwards.

No wonder, if he was travelling this fast (above).

She said the build-up was almost unbearable, telling us: "It's just been exhausting, tenterhooks, elation, absolutely amazing."

"I was pacing, I'd sit down and be straight back up again. I was incredibly nervous," she said.

"I'm always confident in him. He told us just to relax and enjoy it."

However, it wasn't the dream para-triathlon PT4 gold medal for former swimmer Lauren Steadman.

Steadman, from Peterborough, led on the bike yesterday, but was caught by American Grace Norman on the final stage as the event made its debut at Fort Copacabana.

Her silver medal time was 1:11.43, more than a minute behind Norman.

Steadman (below) said: "I went a bit wrong on the swim and I'm really gutted because it cost me about 40 seconds.

"I managed to get back into second by the end of the swim and I made a lot of effort on the bike and that really drained me. When I got onto the run it was just about trying to hang on to silver."

Meanwhile, Clare Cunningham (below), from Cambridge, who finished outside the medals in the same category, tweeted, external it was a "tough race today".

"Many thoughts racing through my head at the moment BUT a huge thank you to you all for your support and good wishes," she said.

But she got her own reward at the end of the race...

    Mmmmm. Cake.

After Jonnie Peacock's stunning athletics gold on Friday, there have been other medal successes for Cambridgeshire's Paralympians.

The three-man team of Jody Cundy and Louis Rolfe - both from Cambridgeshire - along with Jon-Allan Butterworth, won gold in the men's mixed team sprint C1-5 team in the velodrome.

Cundy said it almost felt like a "victory lap" as he led the team home. The Wisbech rider also set a new Paralympic record as he took gold in the time trial on Friday night, banishing the disqualification demons of London 2012.

We can now call Doddington's Jonnie Peacock a double-gold medallist - and how good does that sound!

And he did it in style late on Friday night, finishing in 10.81 secs. New Zealand's Liam Malone took silver in 11.02 secs and his big rival, the USA's Jarryd Wallace, was third in 11.03 secs.

Speaking to Channel 4 after his victory, he said: "I just got to 40 metres then I kept pushing and that's when I pulled away.

"I don't think the pressure was on me. Jarryd has been running really well and I wasn't the favourite in that race. I think the pressure was all on Jarryd, but my experience came through tonight."

He's been busy since - appearing on last night's The Last Leg on Channel 4 and tweeting about his medal victory.
