    As well as major disruption to services via Broxbourne, Abellio Greater Anglia now reports disruption to services between Cambridge and Norwich, owing to a lightning strike at Brandon.

    Abellio Greater Anglia has issued travel advice for anyone wishing to travel from Cambridge this morning.

    Disruption is expected to continue throughout the morning on services via Audley End and Cheshunt, following a lightning strike in the Broxbourne area.

    As we've reported, there's serious disruption for anyone travelling to London from Cambridge.

    A lightning strike in the Broxbourne area has led to delays and cancellations to services using the line.

    It's expected to last all morning.

    The new UKIP leader will be announced later today at the UKIP party conference, and it could be Ramsey councillor Lisa Duffy.

    The post has been vacant since Nigel Farage stood down in July. 

    Speaking to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire earlier, Lisa Duffy told us: "I think it's an exciting day for us. I've had tremendous support and I'm really pleased where we've got to with our campaign."

    When asked she thought Nigel Farage may yet make a comeback, she said: "He'll always be a part of UKIP, but I don't think he's got any ambition to come back at all. We have a massive future ahead of us."

    The announcement is due about 13:30 today.

    Abellio Greater Anglia report that services are severely disrupted this morning. 

    Commuters heading for Liverpool Street are being warned to expect serious disruption after a lightning strike affected signalling equipment in the Broxbourne area.

    Tonight will be humid with clear spells. There's a risk of scattered, heavy showers and thunderstorms moving northwards through the night.

    The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain for much of the region for Friday.

    It'll be a mostly cloudy day with thunderstorms and rain - the heavy downpours could lead to some very localised flooding.

    Moderate north westerly winds, with a maximum temperature of 20(C)  (68F).

  12. Holme Fen Spitfire pilot: Remembered at scene of deathpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    Pilot Officer Harold Penketh was just 20 years old when his plane crashed during a training mission in November 1940.

    Seven days later, a specialist team recovered his body. The Spitfire remained buried nose-down in the soil until a team of archaeologists from Oxford Archaeology East, working with veterans and service personnel, uncovered its remains nearly a year ago.

    A fragment of bone belonging to Pilot Officer Penketh was uncovered during the dig, along with his cigarette case and watch.

  13. Memorial planned for WW2 pilot who crashed at Holme Fenpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    A memorial will be unveiled later this month dedicated to the pilot who lost his life when his Spitfire crashed at Holme Fen in 1940

    In October last year, a week-long excavation of the crash site uncovered the plane, which was flown by Pilot Officer Harold Penketh. 

    The unveiling will take place during a dedication service, close to the crash site.

  14. Village replaces money stolen from charity boxespublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    A cake sale and raffle has managed to raise money for four charities after charity boxes were stolen from a village hall last week.

    This morning £200 was collected at the Ellesmere Centre , externalin the village of Stetchworth, after a special coffee morning went ahead. 

    The money will now be split between The RNLI, The local air ambulance, Marie Curie and Save the Children. 

    The organisers said donations came in "thick and fast", adding "what an amazing community we have".

    Here's a round-up of news stories in Cambridgeshire's papers today:

    The Cambridge News, external says new jobs have been brought to the city with the opening of a new hotel close to Cambridge Railway Station.

    An explosion of an aerosol can alerted a Swaffham Prior couple, external to get out of their house and call the fire service, says the Ely Standard. 

    And congratulations goes to Carol Goodwin, 58-year-old mum of eight, external, who's just completed her 100th marathon. You can read about her achievement in the Hunts Post.

  18. Warning of 'torrential downpours'published at 14:58 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    The Met Office is warning, external of torrential rain for the East this afternoon.

    "Slow-moving, thundery showers may lead to locally torrential downpours across the area, with the risk of frequent lightning," it says.

    "Please be aware that whilst many places will miss them, there is the risk of flash flooding."

    This is the land next to Hinchingbrooke Hospital which is set to be built on, after a agreement was signed between the NHS Trust running the hospital , externaland a private estates company Ryhurst, external

    Although nothing is confirmed yet, it's hoped things like key worker homes will be built here, as well as things like a leisure facility with a pool and gym.

    I spoke to people in the area to find out what they thought of the plans, and most I found were for them.

    They told me that although new homes are needed, they're concerned about the already busy roads close by and are worried the current infrastructure won't be able to cope.   

  20. Hinchingbrooke bosses 'will have great control' in new private development dealpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    A senior manager at Hinchingbrooke Hospital says plans for a private firm to develop 40 acres of its land will help secure the hospital's future and still give it "great control".

    Mark Cammies, director of estates and facilities at Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust, says the 50-50 deal Ryhurst, which will build facilities including a leisure centre, GP surgery and housing, will bring in much needed funds. 

    He stressed the deal is also different to the one the hospital had with private health firm Circle, which for a time ran the hospital before the contract collapsed and it fell back into NHS hands.
