    A neonatal nurse who has dedicated 50 years to caring for thousands of newborn babies has retired.

    Maylin Gosling, from Bury St Edmunds, has spent the final 10 years of her career at the Rosie Hospital, a specialist maternity unit in Cambridge.

    View from the top of Hampton Gardens School

    This was the view from the top of the new Hampton Gardens Secondary School being built in Peterborough, ahead of the topping out ceremony.

    The practice of "topping out" a new building is an ancient Scandinavian ritual which includes placing a tree on top of a new building to "appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction".

    The new school is set to open in September ready for the new academic year.

    The school, which costs £22m, will create about 100 jobs and accommodate 1,500 students.

    A woman who died in a collision on the A505 near Melbourn yesterday has been named as 26-year-old Joy Harrild of Hunters Mews in Dog Kennel Lane, Royston.

    The collision, which happened at Flint Cross about 09:30, involved three vehicles. Ms Harrild died at the scene.

    The 52-year-old driver of a grey Audi TT, also involved in the incident, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where he remains.

    The third driver, a 21-year-old woman, was uninjured.

  6. Residents' 'doubts' over new homes in Littleportpublished at 09:45

    Plans to build 660 new homes in Littleport, near Ely, have been met with opposition from residents in the village.

    Lynn Gibb De Swarte, editor of community magazine Littleport Life, says that residents have "a lot of doubts over the benefits" of the new builds.

    "The services and infrastructure we've got isn't enough to support a new influx of people", she said.

    "For example, you already have to wait weeks for a doctors appointment. With new families, these waiting times will get longer".

    Official data from 2012 suggests there were 3,400 dwellings in Littleport, with estimates now putting that figure at nearer 4,000.

    Plans to build 660 new homes in Littleport, near Ely, have split opinion in the village.

    Residents say the development is a "stupid idea" and would overburden local services like schools and doctors surgeries.

    However, councillor Christine Ambrose-Smith claims it's the "best time ever" to live in the village.

    "We need Littleport to expand", she said.

    The proposed site, to the west of the village, lies north of Grange Lane, by the A10.

    A man from Peterborough has been jailed for 14 years for abusing a boy over a seven-year period.

    Kevin Jarrett pleaded guilty at Peterborough Crown Court yesterday to two counts of rape of a boy under 16, taking indecent photographs of a child and sexual activity with a child.

    The 56-year-old, from All Saints Road, has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

    Police say he began abusing the boy in 1998, and was arrested in 2015.

  15. Theft of sheep has left farm staff 'gutted'published at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2016

    Two Soay sheep have been stolen from Sacrewell Farm, near Peterborough. 

    The sheep were taken between 18:00 yesterday and 07:00 this morning.

    Solar and Luna were kept as pets on the farm, which is run by an agricultural education charity.

    Jack Pishhorn, from the farm, said: "Staff here are absolutely gutted.

    "The thieves broke through the back gate, accessed from the A47, but staff at Sacrewell have no clue as to who they were."

    Composer Benjamin Till has been walking the River Nene to get inspiration for a brand new piece of classical music - to be called Source to the Sea.

    And according to Benjamin's Twitter account, he has completed his epic 112-mile (180km) journey.

    It all started in Badby in Northamptonshire last Thursday and has ended five days later.  

    It's a journey that's taken him from Northamptonshire, through Cambridgeshire, finishing in Lincolnshire close to the Norfolk border where the river enters The Wash.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says one private company, East West Rail, will run everything on the proposed Cambridge to Oxford line.

    The next phase of roadworks on Lower Bridge Street in Peterborough will begin from Monday, 9 January, and last three months.

    Work will see changes to the traffic signals outside the police station, and new paving.

    It is expected to last for 13 weeks to the middle of April.

    One lane of traffic will be closed in both directions, from 09:30 to 15:30 on weekdays.

    A woman has died following a crash on the A505 near Melbourn earlier this morning.

    The collision involved three vehicles - two Ford KAs and an Audi TT.

    The driver of one of the Fords, a woman in her 20s, died at the scene.

    One of the other drivers was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, although it's not known what his injuries are.

    The road is still closed.
