Simon Dobbin's wife Nicole said: "He's doing really, really well.

"He's had some unsettled nights, but I stayed up with him and made him comfortable.

"His mood is a lot happier since he's been home, he gets to see family, and friends come and visit regularly and he's happy in his own environment."

Simon needs round-the-clock care after the assault, which took place after a fixture between Southend United and his team, Cambridge United.

Thirteen men are due to go on trial next month, charged in connection with the assault.

    But that's not all......

They also found a mini digger, a trailer, five trailer hitches, three auger drill bits (used to drill earth), a hydraulic motor, five digger buckets and five metal lamp posts without electrics, all suspected to have been stolen.

A pick-up truck, running on red diesel (which is only supposed to be used by farmers), was also seized.

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

A prison officer who put himself between two inmates after one had just slashed the neck of the other has been commended for his bravery.

The prison officer was present when Kevin McCarthy, 49, attacked inmate Damien Fowkes from behind in a lunch queue at HMP Whitemoor in March.

Alexander Stewart separated the two men and disarmed McCarthy.

Judge David Farrell praised the actions of Mr Stewart, who died from cancer last week, asking his family be told of his "outstanding bravery and courage".

McCarthy, who was already behind bars for attempted murder, pleaded guilty to attempting to murder Fowkes. He was jailed today for a further 18 years.

The incident happened on a wing where 10 of the most "difficult and disruptive" prisoners are housed, said prosecutor Peter Gair.

Armed robber Fowkes, 36, who was already serving a life term, slashed Soham killer Ian Huntley's throat in Durham's Frankland Jail in March 2010.

  17. Police describe Corrie Mckeague landfill search as 'so unusual'published at 16:09 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Orla Moore
    BBC Local Live

    corrie mckeague

The search for missing airman Corrie Mckeague will continue for at least another three weeks, police say.

Corrie disappeared after a night out with pals in Bury St Edmunds eight months ago.

A discrepancy in the bin lorry weight has led investigators to conclude that he may have climbed into one for shelter.

Officers have pinpointed rubbish dating from around the time Corrie went missing - and from the Bury St Edmunds area.

In a statement, Suffolk Police described the operation as "so unusual" and said officers had gained "a greater understanding of both how the waste is deposited and spread out, and the nature and construction of the site."

  18. Prisoner given further life sentencepublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

A prisoner who tried to kill another inmate - who had attacked Soham murderer Ian Huntley - has been jailed for life and must serve at least 18 more years behind bars.

    Kevin McCarthyImage source, Cambridgeshire Police

Kevin McCarthy (above), 49, of HMP Whitemoor, admitted the attempted murder of 41-year-old Damien Fowkes at the prison in court yesterday.

Prosecutor Peter Gair said McCarthy slit fellow inmate Fowkes' throat from behind with a weapon made from a razor blade and thick folds of paper (below) as lunch was being prepared in October 2016.

Fowkes received a 30cm (12in) laceration to his throat which required stitches and he has been left with a permanent scar.

    Homemade weaponImage source, Cambridgeshire Police

It was the third time McCarthy had tried to murder a prisoner, the court heard.

There was no clear motive for the attack, but some prisoners had complained about McCarthy not taking his turn to clean the kitchen earlier that morning, Mr Gair said.

Judge David Farrell told McCarthy "it only failed to kill [Fowkes] because the cut wasn't deep enough."

McCarthy, who appeared in Cambridge Crown Court by videolink, was already serving time for attempted murder, and has convictions stretching back to 1990.

Fowkes himself is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years for the attempted murder of Soham murderer Ian Huntley and the manslaughter of paedophile and child-killer Colin Hatch at a second jail.
