Read MoreMore than half a million people in the West Midlands have taken part in clinical trials in the last decade - that's more than any other region in the country.
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) says 544,115 people have been recruited for "high quality studies" across the West Midlands; 64,278 of whom have participated in the last 12 months.
Drugs firms are choosing this region because of the diverse population, and the number of hospitals and universities involved in medical research.
NIHR - the research arm of the NHS - says the trials give patients access to new drugs and treatments not available elsewhere within the service.

On today’s programme we have the remarkable story of a little girl from Worcester called Willow Rose. She died at birth for eight minutes and has amazed doctors and her parents by making a full recovery after they put her in a tiny ice suit for three days.
Who do the police turn to when things are stolen from them? Midlands Today has asked our region’s police forces to tell us what they’ve had pinched from police stations and while on the beat and the answers have been quite a surprise – handcuffs, emergency vehicles, drugs, more than £100,000 in cash and even horses.
And the region’s largest music festival comes of age today. Weston Park in Staffordshire will be home to up to 90,000 people at the 21st V Festival this weekend.

If you're anything like me, you're already looking forward to this weekend's Olympic action, especially those events involving local competitors such as Birchfield Harrier Matthew Hudson-Smith who is due to run in the men's 4x400m team relay on Saturday.
Then there's a pair of West Midlanders for Team GB's women's hockey squad - who battle it out for gold in tonight's final.
But what about the lesser-spotted oddities of the Games?
BBC News takes a look at the quirkier side of competition, from "bored-looking" lifeguards overseeing green pools to a ban on "toilet fishing". And if that's not enough, take a look at the headline above- talk about a close shave, or not, as the case may be.

Some of the items stolen from police forces in the West Midlands have been recovered over the past five years.
When thieves made off with a blue flashing lamp, officers in Warwickshire managed to get it back.
But cops in our region haven't always been so lucky. When four horses were pinched from West Mercia Police the thieves got away scot-free.
Whether items were retrieved or not, some people are already asking whether the boys and girls in blue need to be a little more careful with their own property.
