Body cameras could be issued to ambulance staff across the West Midlands because of a rise in the number of attacks on paramedics.

CCTV cameras are already being fitted to vehicles to offer them extra protection from patients who are angry, drunk or on drugs.

  11. Fire services 'paying more for the same kit', Home Office figures suggestpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

West Midlands Fire Service paid £100 more for leather firefighting boots than colleagues in Cornwall, according to spending figures for "common equipment" being released today by the Home Office.

The government is publishing its national overview illustrating, while the cost of several products was broadly similar across the country, in some cases authorities paid as much as five times more than others for the same kit.

Our region's service paid £175 for boots which the Home Office said cost £75 a pair in Cornwall. Cornall ordered 574, compared to one pair in the West Midlands, according to the figures.

Brandon Lewis, minister for policing and the fire service, said: "It makes no sense for fire and rescue authorities to buy separately when there are both financial and operational benefits to buying together."

A note accompanying the figures from the Home Office said: "For some authorities, this was several years ago, and the general cost of certain items (electronic items in particular) may have changed in the intervening period."

  14. Dozens of laser pen attacks on planes prompts call for law changepublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

People found carrying powerful laser pointers should be arrested even if they are not in use, the head of the UK's aviation regulator has said.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), says new legislation is needed to cut the number of laser attacks on aircraft.

It is an offence to act in a manner "likely to endanger an aircraft" under the existing Air Navigation Order 2009.

A government spokeswoman said it was "looking to make changes" to the law. Last year there were 94 of these incidents at Birmingham Airport.
