    An 85-year-old woman was rescued after getting trapped inside her Nuneaton bungalow during a kitchen fire.

    Emergency crews were called at 16:15 yesterday where they found the woman on the floor but still conscious.

    Damage was minimal and the woman was put in the care of the ambulance staff.

    The fire is thought to have started by a hot container on the kitchen worktop.

  2. Man sustains 'serious' head injury in assaultpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    A man was left with serious head and facial injuries after being assaulted, external in Arley in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    Police say a 27-year-old man from Coventry has been arrested in connection with the attack on Gun Hill at about 03:20.

    They say it's thought the suspect and victim, 45, know each other.

    The crash on the northbound section of the M42 involved one lorry, three vans and a car, the fire service says. Drivers suffered only minor injuries.

    Two lanes remain closed between J5 and J6 for recovery work.

    The transport secretary, Chris Grayling, claims Coventry will benefit from HS2.

    He says the planned high speed rail line through Warwickshire to Birmingham will ease congestion on existing routes.

    Speaking at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham he said that by taking fast trains off the West Coast Main Line "you create more capacity for trains to places like Milton Keynes, Northampton and Coventry".

    Flowers and toys have been left at the scene of the Coventry bus crash that killed seven-year-old Rowan Fitzgerald a year ago.

    One message reads: "We were side by side until the end. You weren't just my cousin, you were my best friend."

    Another said: "If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven, and bring you home again."

    Rowan was a passenger on the double decker that crashed into a supermarket on October 3 last year. Pedestrian Dora Hancox, in her 70s, also died.

    More big distribution warehouses are likely to be built in the West Midlands despite the threat of Brexit, according to a leading businessman.

    Former head of the British Chambers of Commerce, David Frost, said they're essential to keeping goods moving whether Britain was in the European Union or not - and the region would be the heart of the system.

    Coventry City supporter groups will join Charlton fans to protest at the way both clubs are being run to try to convince owners to sell.

    The Sky Blue Trust, PSB and Cov Fans Together say they've united to form the Fight the Jimmy Hill Way Alliance, and will join Charlton's own protest group, the Coalition Against Roland Duchatelet (CARD) on a march prior to the away game on 15 October.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has announced £12m funding for the transport component of the "Midlands Engine" - the growth-focused aim of the Midlands Connect project that sees collaboration between councils, enterprise and government over investment opportunities.

    One option proposes infrastructure improvements between Coventry and Leamington Spa to enable improved direct national rail access to Birmingham Airport and Coventry from cities such as Oxford, Reading, Derby, Leeds, York and Newcastle.

  18. Mass held for boy killed in Coventry bus crashpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    A special mass will be held today in memory of a seven-year-old boy killed in a bus crash in Coventry. 

    Passenger Rowan Fitzgerald died when the double decker in which he was travelling crashed into a supermarket last October. Dora Hancox, a pedestrian in her 70s, was also killed.

    The memorial mass is at Rowan's school, St Anthony's Primary in Leamington Spa.

    Head teacher Jayne McSharry said it would be a "quiet mass to allow us to think about Rowan, and think about hope for the future".
