Black Friday sales this year are likely to top £2bn, say analysts, as shoppers hunt for bargains ahead of an expected rise in prices in 2017.
But some shoppers in Coventry today just weren't falling for the hype, with one saying some things were more expensive than the week before.
Another said the opportunities "were not as good as last year".

Local business leader Jonathan Browning was at the meeting last night in which JLR's chief executive laid out a future vision that included the doubling of production and possible creation of thousands of jobs.
The Chairman of the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership said "there are challenges" but the area was "well placed to help make it happen, and I believe the timing is right."
He said: "We have the unique combination of academic and research excellence – to an unparalleled level – an ambitious world-class automotive company, the requisite skills and a common ambition to realise our potential."

Campaigners opposed to a 24-hour distribution centre understood to be run by online retail giant Amazon have vowed to "continue their fight".
The planned warehouse, for the former Jaguar site on Browns Lane, was given the go-ahead by councillors yesterday, with one saying it could mean the "biggest influx of jobs into the city" in more than a decade.
Paul Liggins, vice chairman of the local Allesley and Coundon Wedge Society, said that planners "made two or three fundamental errors in their presentation to the planning committee" and that their campaign "isn't over".

Plans to cut the number of wardens at sheltered housing in Nuneaton and Bedworth have to be considered because of funding cuts, the councillor in charge told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.
Julie Jackson says reducing the numbers from 50 to 14 is the "last thing they want to do", but it's "almost inevitable".
Under the proposed changes, several sheltered housing schemes will be decommissioned and the sheltered housing service will be replaced with an "independent living" service.
A final decision will be made in January.

Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya said the technology is currently being worked on at University of Warwick, where WMG is based.

Jaguar Land Rover has been laying out its ambitious future vision.
JLR has not publicly speculated on the amount of jobs that could be created if plans to double its production and make electric vehicles in the UK are realised.
An unconfirmed figure of 10,000 jobs came from Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, Chairman of Warwick Manufacturing Group.
A company spokesman said the huge investment was "very much a want rather than a will".
Here's the statement from Jaguar Land Rover on its ambitions:
"Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr Ralf Speth has confirmed his vision to double the production output of the business, make EVs [electric vehicles] in the UK and the desire to make the UK a global centre of excellence for battery research and development.
"However this is dependent on overcoming infrastructure and capacity issues.
"We cannot comment on quoted job numbers or a time frame."
The Chief Executive of Jaguar Land Rover has laid out a future vision which could see thousands of new jobs created in Coventry producing electric vehicles.
Speaking at an industry event, Dr Ralf Speth said that if the government could help upgrade power supplies, invest in surrounding infrastructure and guarantee access to engineering talent then Britian's largest carmaker by volume would like to double production from 500,000 to 1 million cars a year.

JLR says its plans could demand the electricity resources of four power plants.

Jeremy Corbyn hasn't ruled out a return to the Labour Party by former Coventry MP Dave Nellist.
Nellist,expelled from the party in 1992, is among a group of hard-left former Labour members who've applied to rejoin the party to help stop, they say, "further compromise and retreats" to "pacify the Blairites".
On a trip to Nuneaton yesterday, the Labour leader said the decision wasn't down to him personally and the application "will be dealt with fairly" by the party "and we'll let him know".
