Philip Seccombe said he hoped her family would take some comfort from the "knowledge that Warwickshire Police is now doing things differently" and that the way vulnerable people are supported is "very different now".

A payout has been made to the family, who live in Portugal, but the solicitor representing them says they can never be compensated for their loss.

  6. Mayoral candidate makes housing pledgepublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

The UKIP candidate in May's elections for West Midlands Mayor says increasing housing stock will be his priority, but not at the expense of greenbelt land.

Pete Durnell said: "If we can generate that money to actually put into preparing those brownfield sites, whether they be offices or disused factories,...then we can build on brownfield.

"The reason it's not done is purely and simply because it's cheaper to build on green grass."

Mr Durnell became a politician in 2014 when he stood for councillor in his home ward of Bristnall in the Sandwell local elections.

Sion Simon is Labour's candidate, Andrew Street is standing for the Conservatives, Beverley Nielsen is the Liberal Democrats' candidate and James Burn is representing the Greens in the election.

  12. Hospital services campaign group to foldpublished at 15:43 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

Members of a group who have been fighting to maintain services at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch have decided to end their campaign.

The Save the Alex group, made up of volunteers from across Worcestershire and south Warwickshire, was formed four years ago to try to prevent the downgrading of services at the site.

Despite holding two huge rallies and getting 55,000 people to sign a petition to save maternity and A&E services, Save the Alex said that was not enough.

Maternity was temporarily closed at the Alexandra Hospital in November 2015 before the arrangement became permanent, while children's inpatient services at the A&E department at the site were also moved to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Supporters say they feel they have exhausted their options to bring about change.
