On a visit to a city tower block, Jonathan Herrick from West Midlands Fire Service told Radio Five Live's Wake Up To Money that the law as it pertains to tower blocks and domestic premises was a "very grey area" and created a "lot of interpretations".

The front doors of flats, he said, were of particular concern.

"You will find fire officers and fire authorities who will want to check the doors, and others who will not, but there isn't particularly a consistent approach to that because it is not clear in law."
