Theatre and cinema audiences watching one of Shakespeare's goriest tragedies will be asked to wear heart rate monitors in an experiment to explore the strength of reaction and engagement with the play.
Participants taking in Titus Andronicus at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and a second set watching the production live-streamed to a cinema will be used to check whether the Bard's plays still shock.
The project, in conjunction with Ipsos MORI, will also try to explore the questions around whether the emotional engagement of watching a play live at the theatre is the same as watching it live at the cinema.
Titius Andronicusopens at the theatre on 4 July and is broadcast as "Live from Stratford-upon-Avon" to cinemas across the world on 9 August.

A man beat, burned and raped a vulnerable teenager in a playground before "frogmarching" his victim to a cash machine for money, police say.
Timothy Forsyth, 23, of no fixed address, has been jailed for 11 years over the attack, having pleaded guilty to rape, robbery, assault and theft.
West Midlands Police said he burned the face of his 19-year-old male victim with cigarettes during the ordeal in September last year.
Forsyth befriended the teenager in Hall Green Road, Coventry, and lured him to a play area in Bell Green.
According to the force, Forsyth lied that he was a have-a-go hero, saying he had come to his victim's rescue when he saw him being assaulted by a group of men.

A fire safety officer in Coventry has told the BBC the system for regulating fire safety in tower blocks is "too complicated".
On a visit to a city tower block, Jonathan Herrick from West Midlands Fire Service told Radio Five Live's Wake Up To Money that the law as it pertains to tower blocks and domestic premises was a "very grey area" and created a "lot of interpretations".
The front doors of flats, he said, were of particular concern.
"You will find fire officers and fire authorities who will want to check the doors, and others who will not, but there isn't particularly a consistent approach to that because it is not clear in law."

A specialist acute centre for stroke services is proposed for University Hospital in Coventry under plans for patients across the city and Warwickshire.
Under the proposals, the stroke service at Warwick Hospital would close.
The South Warwickshire Keep our NHS Public pressure group says it's "deeply concerned" that the changes mean stroke services are to be cut.
Dr David Spraggett, GP and chair of NHS South Warwickshire Clinical Commissioning Group said there is "national evidence" that making the changes would "significantly improve" outcomes for those who suffer a stroke.
