    A man wielding a sword threatened staff in a Nuneton fish and chip shop, prompting armed officers to race to the scene, police say., external

    The man pulled the weapon on staff at Chaplin's Fish Bar on Midlands Road after he entered with two others to order food. He became aggressive and pushed a till on to the floor.

    The Warwickshire force said during the "terrifying" ordeal at about 21:50 on Thursday, staff fled the shop and left the three men by the front door.

    The death of an engineer killed in a lift shaft fall has been ruled misadventure.

    An inquest at Warwickshire Justice Centre heard James Merritt, an engineer surveyor with Zurich, had been carrying out a lift inspection at Telent Technology Services in Warwick last October when he was found at the bottom of the shaft.

    The 39-year-old father-of-two from Hampton Magna was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The 27-year-old batsman's signed a three-year deal to move from Somerset.

    He played 31 games for Somerset, having joined them in 2015, making his maiden one-day hundred in May.

    CCTV footage has been released of a "key witness" to whom police want to speak over a machete attack on 25 June.

    The West Midlands force says a confrontation began near to Morrisons petrol station on Chester Road, Birmingham, with the actual assault happening on Firs Lane, Haseley, Warwickshire - approximately 30 miles away - at about 20:00.

    The force says it believes the man pictured goes by the nickname "Bobby" and witnessed part of the attack.

    DConstable Neil Wilson said: "A man has been arrested and charged in connection with this incident.

    "However we believe 'Bobby' is a significant witness and are keen to speak to him as soon as possible."

    Two men suffered serious burns when a van's fuel tank exploded, the ambulance service says.

    Fire crews were called to the scene in Garrards Road, Shipston-on-Stour, shortly after 20:00 yesterday to deal with the resultant blaze.

    A 57-year-old man suffered burns to his torso and legs and a 21-year-old man injured his hands and arms.

    They were treated at the site with burns dressings and taken by ambulance to the specialist burns centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

    More than 30 police officers from around the UK are passing through the area today, on a 180-mile (290km) cycle ride in remembrance of colleagues who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

    The Police Unity Tour, external will be passing through Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire over the next two days, finishing at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas.

    Deputy Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman (pictured above right) from West Mercia Police is among them and she said she was taking part to remember PC Richard Gray who was shot dead in Shrewsbury in 2007, while trying to arrest a gunman who was holding two fellow officers hostage.

    More than £170,000 is going to be spent installing bollards, lockable gates and trip rails at car parks and open spaces across Warwick district in a bid to stop illegal traveller encampments, says the council.

    The six-month programme of work is being carried out following a review of recent incidents in which unauthorised camps were set up St Nicholas Park and Newbold Comyn.

    A district-wide review, with the aim of finding permanent and transit sites, will also be carried out.

    A four-year-old girl needed stitches in her face after being bitten by a dog in Nuneaton, police say.

    She was with her mum and two sisters when she was attacked by the animal in Marner Road on Monday 24 July at about 19:00.

    The dog was accompanied by four men, described as being in their late teens. They ran off following the attack.
