  2. Suspected cat poisoning investigated by RSPCApublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

    The death of three cats in Atherstone is being investigated by the RSPCA which suspects one or more may have been poisoned.

    Black and white Flick and tabby Jasper were owned by Chris Cooper. They died earlier this month, with early post-mortem results showing Jasper may have been poisoned.

    Mr Cooper also lost a third cat, Sebastian, twelve months ago.

    RSPCA inspector Sally Kearns described the deaths as "concerning" and appealed to pet owners in the area to be vigilant.

    An acclaimed dancer from Coventry has been appointed as the lead principal for the English National Ballet.

    Aaron Robison began dancing as a pupil at the city's Pattison's Dance Academy.

    His mum says values picked up in Coventry are behind his success.

    The 31-year-old is returning to the UK after stints abroad and will star in a production of Romeo and Juliet in the summer.

    A study led by the University of Warwick and University Hospital found injecting anaesthetic agents directly around the knee join during surgery also negated the need for specialist equipment.

    Lead author of the report, Peter Wall, said the injections had proven to be "safe and effective" and involved fewer resources.

    Walls at a Coventry block of flats are at "heightened risk of partial collapse", a social housing provider says.

    Whitefriars Housing has contacted residents of Philmont Court in Coventry with details of remedial building work that, it said, was needed following an engineering investigation commissioned by the National House Building Council (NHBC).

    According to correspondence sent to residents, an issue with wall tiles during original construction work means "brickwork could be at risk of failure" under certain circumstances, which include sections of wall being hit by a car and "extreme high winds".

    Bracing to walls and protective barriers are to be installed at the site in Tile Hill.

    Whitefriars Housing says it is pursuing a claim against the NHBC warranty on the building that was built ten years ago.

    A musical performance at Coventry Cathedral to mark World Mental Health Day will feature the live-streamed sound of 50,000 bees from a hive within the Cathedral grounds.

    Renowned artist Wolfgang Buttress and music ensemble BE will be performing their album "ONE" along with a community choir in an event engineered by the city's mental health resource centre The Pod.

    Engineers from Severn Trent are dealing with a burst water pipe in Dunchurch, which, it says, is causing supply problems for residents.

    It says most water supplies should start to return, although some people may experience low pressure.

    A man who died following what police called an "altercation" has been described as a "loving son and brother" by his family.

    Peter Spiers, 66, died in hospital following the incident in Market Place, Nuneaton, on Saturday 15 July.

    Police said a post mortem examination was inconclusive and more tests were due to be carried out.

    A 46-year-old man from Nuneaton arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed while investigations continue.

  14. Woman wants answers over brother's death days after arrestpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

    The sister of a man who died nine days after he was arrested by police is appealing for help in finding out what happened.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commisson is investigating the death of 32-year-old Darren Cumberbatch in hospital last week. The police watchdog said he was taken ill the week before at a property in Nuneaton attended by officers.

    In Coventry last night, his sister Carla Cumberbatch attended a meeting with about 200 others in which it was claimed a police taser had been discharged. The IPCC has requested that people - particularly on social media - do not speculate over the circumstances surrounding Mr Cumberbatch's death while its investigation is under way.

    The police watchdog is carrying out door to door inquiries near where Darren was arrested and is awaiting the results of Tuesday's post mortem examination.

    It said it would be reviewing CCTV from the premises and seek similar at the hospital to which Mr Cumberbatch was taken.

  15. 'Action needed' on ring road to tackle air pollutionpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

    Measures need to be taken on Coventry's ring road to tackle illegal levels of air pollution the Environment Department (Defra) has said.

    It was named as one of 80 A-roads and motorways where poor air quality needed tackling. The A38 and A452 in Birmingham was among them.

    Ministers have warned councils they should exhaust other options before imposing charging zones.
