    A post mortem examination is due to take place today on a man who died in hospital days after being arrested, investigators say.

    Police attended a Nuneaton property earlier this month after receiving calls about Darren Cumberbatch, 32, who was on the premises.

    There, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which is investigating the death, he became unwell. He was taken to George Eliot Hospital where he died nine days later.

    Warwickshire Police said it had referred the death to the police watchdog and was providing full support to investigators.

  2. Cost of holiday childcare risen by 82% in the West Midlandspublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The cost of holiday childcare has risen by more than 82% across the West Midlands since 2010, Labour has said.

    Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said the situation was made worse because incomes had fallen in real terms over the same period.

    Nationally there has been a rise of 50%, according to Ms Rayner.

    The Tories said Labour had "blundered" because the party was in charge of childcare in Wales, where they said rises had been double the national average.

    A box in which a puppy was abandoned at the roadside had wood placed on top to stop it getting out, the Dogs Trust says.

    The 10-week-old terrier cross, named Peanut by the charity, was discovered by a member of the public on the A446 in Berkswell after crying was heard coming from the box.

    She's now being looked after at the Trust's rehoming centre in Honily.

  4. Street road racers: 'Tougher measures needed'published at 09:42 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The West Midlands' police and crime commissioner says people want to see "tough measures" taken against three men filmed racing at up to 134mph (215km/h) who were spared jail yesterday.

    Following the trio's sentencing - six-month prison sentences suspended for two years - David Jamieson told BBC Radio Four's PM programme: "I think we need a much stronger effort from government on road safety.

    "But we also need the courts backing us up and doing what ordinary people want, actually to see tough measures taken against people like this. These particular people could be back on the road again driving in 12 months after their ban."

    The race happened in wet and dark conditions on a Birmingham dual carriageway in March.

    Midlands correspondent Phil Mackie said the BBC understood West Midlands Police was unhappy with the the sentence.

    Three Coventry primary schools are to get new buildings to help meet requirements for nursery provision, says the city council.

    Modular classrooms are to be provided by the council at Mount Nod, Sacred Heart and St Gregory's primary schools, at a cost of around £800,000.

    The council said the buildings would help the city meet requirements following the national introduction of 30 hours of free nursery provision for all three year olds.

    Councillors will consider the nursery provision report, external at a meeting on 1 August.

    Proposals for a National Battery Prototype Centre, developed by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), could be a step closer after the government announced a shake-up of energy generation rules.

    Business Secretary Greg Clark outlined details of a competition for innovation in battery technology, which he says will help make the UK a world leader in battery design and manufacture.

    An Audi A3 may have been set on fire deliberately in Leamington Spa on Saturday, police say, external.

    The fire service was called to the scene on Mill Road at about 02:00 and is urging any witnesses to come forward.
