    Poundland has signed a deal to stay in Nuneaton - renting a shop unit from the council for just £1 a year.

    The firm wanted to move out after taking over the former 99p Stores unit because it already has two branches in the town.

    But the council didn't want another empty shop on Queens Road so offered it a £1-a-year deal for two years.

    Coventry's dilapidated Riley Square shopping centre will undergo a huge refurbishment after the council agreed to transfer ownership to a private firm.

    The 1960s precinct in Bell Green has fallen into disrepair in recent years and just a third of shops are occupied.

    Innovative Retail Development Limited (IRDL) will now begin plans to transform the site with new shop units and affordable housing after Coventry City Council's cabinet unanimously approved the plans yesterday.

    A dog was left locked in a van without water as temperatures soared to 27C (80F), forcing police to break in and save it.

    The PCSOs from Warwickshire Police said the dog would have died had an alert member of the public in Whitnash not contacted them.

    They found the dog lying still in the foot well and it still refused food and water when it was eventually rescued.

    The RSPCA was called out to help and said the officers saved the animal's life on Sunday morning.

    A woman held by police after a man was stabbed in the head has been released.

    The 33-year-old was arrested after a man was found with head injuries in Charminster Drive, Styvechale, Coventry, on Sunday night.

    His injuries were not life-threatening and investigations continue, West Midlands Police said.

  7. Aston Martin in £500m deal with Japanpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 30 August 2017

    Aston Martin has secured a £500m deal with Japan, which will see a new office built in Tokyo.

    The five-year deal was announced by the car firm's president Andy Palmer during a visit to Japan with Prime Minister Theresa May.

    Aston Martin exports from Gaydon and St Athan will total more than £400m and be boosted by the new Sports Utility Vehicle.

    The firm will also buy more than £70m in components from Japanese suppliers including Bridgestone, Denso, Mitsubishi and Yazaki.

    The Aston Martin Meta Technology and Luxury Accelerator office will open in Tokyo in 2018.

    Mrs May said the deal would safeguard jobs at Gaydon, Warwickshire, and St Athan, in the Vale of Glamorgan, south Wales.

    The Avon Navigation Trust is looking to open up the river between Warwick and Stratford and says it could bring in thousands more tourists to the region.

    But it's feared adjusting the water levels will mean no more milling can take place at Charlecote.

    Plans to open a stretch of the River Avon near Stratford to boats and barges could threaten the long-term future of Charlecote Mill, near Warwick.

    The Avon Navigation Trust is looking to open up the river between Warwick and Stratford and claims it could bring in thousands more tourists to the region.

    But Karl Grevatt, who runs the historic water mill in Hampton Lucy, says plans to increase water levels would affect its ability to churn.

    It has produced flour for the local community for generations.
