    The A5086 Gote Bridge in Cockermouth is closed in both directions between the Derwent Street junction and the Wakefield Road junction because of flooding.

    Andy Connell, from Appleby Town Council, says the bridge that links two parts of the town is still closed.

    He said: "The town is cut off, there's no power in the town centre and we don't know when that's going to be restored.

    "The town bridge got a terrific strike from a tree trunk - hopefully it's not structurally damaged but it needs further inspection."

    A cordoned off bridge in Appleby is cutting the town in two until an inspection can be carried out.

    Andy Connell, from Appleby Town Council, said: "2005 seemed like something that could never be repeated but it's been repeated with extras.

    "The water has risen higher, but damage to property, to businesses and to people's houses is on a scale greater than it was in 2005.

    "People have been supporting each other, it's very heartening that they do. We're still in the disaster situation - there's a long, long way to go."

    She says: "There is nothing in [the house]... it's just a building, everything we lifted up thinking we were saving has all gone.

    "The electricity board have come in and taken all of the fuses out of all the houses so we can go in. I suppose it's still quite dangerous really because they're really old houses."

    Electricity North West said it hoped to restore supply to 42,000 people in Lancashire from 08:00, and its teams were working "tirelessly" to reconnect 1,450 homes in Cumbria.

    I'm on the Warwick Road in Carlisle which is still in darkness - however the flooding, which reached about 50cm in height, has subsided.

    Some residents have spent the night without electricity or heat and you get the impression they want to start the clean-up.

    Virgin Trains hope to have the line to Scotland reopened by 12:00 - with speed limits of 20mph.

    The Environment Agency is warning there could be some localised flooding over the next few days.
